As a bona-fide millennial, Gap fragrances are integral to my life, not to mention my career as a fashion and beauty writer. I’d save up my babysitting money to buy the travel-sized metal tubes of Dream, Heaven, and So Pink, and smelling them today sends me straight back to my tween- and teenage mall days.
In case you haven’t noticed, we’re in a bit of a Gap renaissance at the moment. The mall mainstay has had its fair share of ups and downs over the past decade-plus, but big-name collaborations with major stars like KATSEYE and Hailey Bieber, viral commercials starring Tyla and Troye Sivan, and an increasing obsession with thrifting vintage Gap have brought the retailer back into the mainstream in a way it hasn’t been since the early 2000s — a.k.a. when I was spending my hard-earned cash on low-rise flares and a bottle of Dream to match.
Though the Gap scents have been available at Gap Factory outlet stores, they’ve been missing from the main stores and online for years. Longtime fans have been clamoring for them to make a comeback; some of the originals go for hundreds of dollars on eBay, so deep is the nostalgia for Grass, Dream, Om, and Heaven. And so, in late July, Gap dipped into its archives to revive and revisit its most iconic scents and relaunched them under a new Gap Beauty umbrella.
It’s important to note that these are not identical to the Gap scents of the ‘90s and 2000s. They were reimagined and updated for a 2026 consumer, though a few retain some of their original DNA and smell quite a bit like their predecessors. It’s less about bringing the scents back exactly as they were and more about capturing their vibe. As someone who deeply loved the originals, I was so excited to check out the 2026 update — and if you’re curious about Gap Beauty and its initial drop of five scents, scroll on for a review and ranking!
#1: Dream Eau de Parfum
Personal bias aside — Dream was always my fave — this scent is the perfect example of a perfume that feels absolutely timeless, something that would resonate in the ’90s, 2000s, and today. It’s also the closest to the original fragrance, which was launched in 1995. Dream is a light, floaty floral musk that opens with a cheerful combination of bergamot, orange blossom, and neroli and opens up into a bouquet of freesia and musk. Dream easily satisfies longtime Gap fans and newbies who are just encountering the scents for the first time; it really feels like “Gap,” or the lived-in jeans or khakis and T-shirt look the retailer made famous. Nailed it, Gap!
