‘Happy Gilmore’ (1996)
Rotten Tomatoes: 63% | IMDb: 7.0/10
One of the finest comedies of the 1990s, Adam Sandler‘s iconic Happy Gilmore follows the titular ice hockey player as his anger issues and personal trouble leave him looking for a new sport. Despite showing little sign of talent, Gilmore turns his attention to the world of golf, but how will his loudmouthed tantrums fare on the quiet course?
More than any other movie currently on Netflix, Happy Gilmore is a must-watch. Ahead of the upcoming release of the long-awaited Happy Gilmore 2 this Friday, July 25, there is no better time to check back in with one of Sandler’s finest comic characters after almost three decades. Endlessly quotable and featuring a plethora of surprising moments, from brutal put-downs to an unlikely brawl with television royalty, Happy Gilmore is as riotous today as it was in the ’90s.
2
‘Shiva Baby’ (2020)
Rotten Tomatoes: 96% | IMDb: 7.1/10
Summer is a season where the family comes together to celebrate all manner of occasions. If you’re someone who has a particular hatred for these occasions, then your best option is to stay at home, draw the curtains, and indulge in this deliciously chaotic takedown of familial strife. In the brilliant Emma Seligman‘s feature-length directorial debut, Shiva Baby follows Rachel Sennott‘s Danielle, a college senior who lives a double life. However, all hell breaks loose when she attends a Jewish funeral, as the two worlds collide in spectacularly disastrous fashion.
An anxiety-inducing masterpiece, Shiva Baby is both terrifyingly relatable and utterly hilarious. The movie features a pitch-perfect performance from Sennott, along with a great host of ensemble turns working wonders with Seligman’s script. If you like your movies fast, sharp, and unmissable, look no further than Shiva Baby to keep you entertained this week.

‘Smile’ (2022)
Rotten Tomatoes: 79% | IMDb: 6.5/10
2024 was an impressive year for horror, with one of the standouts coming in the form of Smile 2. Two years prior, Smile was released to similar acclaim, with some even calling the first outing in director Parker Finn‘s burgeoning franchise the best. The film follows psychiatrist Dr. Rose Cotter (Sosie Bacon), who spends her life treating people with deep-rooted unresolved trauma (and running from her own). However, when a sinister force seems to start stalking her, Rose is left with no choice but to confront the demons.
Horror is at its best when blending psychological themes with a simple premise and unique scares. That is Smile in a nutshell, with Finn proving to be an innovative mind with a wonderfully bright future. Pulse-racing from the first moment, Smile will have you on the edge of your seat, petrified with fear as you peek through the gaps between your fingers at the bloody carnage on screen.
