1914 was the year in which the famed J.R.R. Tolkien penned his first ever manuscript that mentioned Middle-earth. Two decades down the line and then some, Tolkien would publish his first novel, The Hobbit, in 1937. Since then, life has been great for those who have been lucky enough to fall in love with The Lord of the Rings franchise. Setting aside those glory years when we first encountered hobbits, elves and all the other magical creatures of Middle-earth on the pages of Tolkien’s books and Peter Jackson‘s famous trilogy of the early 2000s, beginning with The Fellowship of the Ring. We are arguably living in the best possible time to be a lover of The Lord of the Rings.
Since Jackson’s The Return of the King premiered in December 2003, wrapping up the director’s critically acclaimed trilogy. One can argue that the franchise’s return to the big screen in live action has been coming for some time now. The Hunt for Gollum, a directorial effort from Andy Serkis, the actor who played Gollum/Sméagol in the original trilogy, is poised to make that a reality in the coming months. In 2022, Amazon decided to go deep into the seemingly endless ocean that is Tolkien’s lore with a five-season run centered on the Second Age of Middle-Earth. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power would emerge from that, becoming the most expensive fantasy series, maintaining viewer interest ahead of its highly anticipated third season this November.
However, there is one new Lord of the Rings property set to release soon. Titled The Lord of the Rings: Ascension, the new game will allow gamers to relive the original trilogy as a new tabletop deck-building game with three new expansion sets adapting the main trilogy of The Lord of the Rings films. This new Lord of the Rings game will arrive on July 14, 2026, with the game’s launch set dropping on GameFound at 10 AM Pacific. The focus of the Ascension series lies in the building of powerful decks, creation of card synergies, and ultimately using those combinations to defeat opponents. Stone Blade Entertainment, the studio behind Ascension, will also release a Deluxe Lord of the Rings: Ascension set that includes additional premium content for fans.
‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’ Has Spared No Effort Regarding Talent
There is much to be excited about when it comes to the franchise’s return to the big screen with The Hunt for Gollum. However, one can equally grasp the palpable disappointment among some fans when Warner Bros confirmed that Viggo Mortensen was being replaced by Jamie Dornan as Aragorn in the upcoming effort. However, despite the change to the man who’d ultimately sit on Gondor’s throne, Warner Bros has assembled an all-time roster for the film, including returning stars, to get the blood rushing. Veterans returning to the piece include Lee Pace as Thranduil, Elijah Wood as Frodo, Ian McKellen as Gandalf, and the aforementioned Serkis as Gollum. Excitingly, the newcomers include Leo Woodall as Halvard, Anya Taylor-Joy as Seren, and Kate Winslet as Marigol.
The Lord of the Rings: Ascension arrives on July 14, 2026. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates around The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum and The Rings of Power Season 3.
