The director of The Punisher: One Last Kill has finally explained the meaning behind the title. The Marvel special is set to arrive on Disney+ on May 12. Jon Bernthal is going to reprise his role of Frank Castle in it. Bernthal’s character will next appear in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Reinaldo Marcus Green explains The Punisher: One Last Kill title meaning
The Punisher: One Last Kill director Reinaldo Marcus Green recently shared why he gave this title to the Marvel Studios special. The title has created a mystery among fans, who have theorized that Frank Castle might give up his killing spree in the project.
Speaking to The Direct, Green said the title is a “misdirect in the best way” and makes fans speculate about Punisher’s fate. He stated, “Marvel has a lot of hand in the titles and that regard. I think for fans, though, like you said, once they see it, they’ll understand it, and I think that’s what’s most important. I think it’s one of those situations where you hear it, you’re like, ‘Wait, is this the end of The Punisher?’ And when you realize that maybe it’s not, I think that makes it even more cool.”
Green added that the title is his way of “subverting expectations” of the audience. However, he has made sure that the special does so without annoying anyone and “makes people satisfied when they see the end.”
Previously, Jon Bernthal shared his take on the grieving tone fans witnessed in the trailer for The Punisher: One Last Kill. He told Entertainment Weekly in an interview, “We’re really honing in on him kind of at his end, when he doesn’t know what to do, and he’s completely sort of enveloped in hopelessness. That’s kind of the place where this piece picks up.”
