For decades, Uwe Boll has built a career turning video games into movies. Now, in a bizarre twist of cinematic karma, the tables have turned: his latest project is actually getting its own game adaptation. That’s right, Citizen Vigilante—easily one of the summer’s most controversial films—is officially getting a video game on PS5.
Citizen Vigilante: The Video Game
“Crime has taken over the city. Corruption reaches the highest levels of power,” reads the description of the video game. “As Sanders, you decide to take justice into your own hands. Hunt down criminals, uncover a conspiracy, and fight your way through intense action across a large urban environment. Experience a story driven action game featuring brutal gunfights, varied missions, vehicle gameplay, and an original soundtrack from the official film“
There will be a story-driven action campaign, with 8 varied missions spread across a large city. Featuring intense gunplay and cinematic action, players will be able to drive different vehicles as they engage in brutal combat with gore and dismemberment. It will also feature the official soundtrack of the movie. You can check out the teaser trailer at the top of the article.
Banned in Germany?
Citizen Vigilante (the film this time) centers on a wealthy American businessman played by Armie Hammer who transforms into a notorious vigilante targeting violent criminals and corrupt officials in Europe, ultimately becoming both a hunted fugitive and an unlikely media phenomenon. Boll has said that the film is a “very dark and violent movie” which features “rapes and knife attacks” as it examines the “landscape in Europe.“
Boll explained that the film had actually been banned in his native Germany for its extreme violence and alleged anti-migrant message, which naturally made people want to see it even more. “The rating system refused to give us a rating [in Germany], so now you can only watch it if you bring in a Blu-ray from Austria or Switzerland,” Boll said. “And I think they did that on purpose. It was a deliberate censorship decision. I hired a lawyer to complain about it, but we lost in a six-two vote as I was told that the film was inciting violence against migrants.“ Together with Elon Musk, Boll even released the entire film on X, where it streamed for free for 48 hours. He’s even teased that a sequel is on the way.
