Timothée Chalamet Shaved His Head

Timothée Chalamet’s head is confirmed shaved. Last night, he appeared at the New York Film Festival in leather pants tucked into military boots, a leather bomber, rimless glasses, a big round watch with a bright orange strap, and a baseball cap embroidered with what looks like a stickman caught mid-stride. The hat had standard dimensions for its style, hitting the head mid-crown so as to expose the lower skull—which, in this case, was clearly shorn. Less than 24 hours later, in an Instagram live, he shared a video of himself with a bare head, wearing a Marty Supreme sweatshirt.

Per summer postulations predicated on pictures of the actor spotted in a suspicious kerchief in Saint-Tropez—he probably definitely has a buzzcut for Dune: Part Three.

The plot for the third installment of Denis Villeneuve’s film adaptation of Frank Herbert’s book about the psychotropic economics of a desert planet is fuzzy. Chalamet’s character, Paul, is supposed to get [spoiler alert] caught in another sandstorm and blinded by a radioactive Stone Burner; his wife secretly drugs his lover; and he accidentally sets off a galactic religious jihad that causes sixty billion deaths. (Stressful.)

Timothée is quite thin. This is known. Usually, his angular framework is softened by a mop of romantic curls. Without it, Chalamet looks more, maybe, intense. On stage at Lincoln Center on Monday night, Chalamet wore black, which made his clean pale head sort of pop. The effect was a little lunar.

Paul having no hair is not a canonical detail from the text of Dune Messiah. The books only mention the protagonist’s dark waves. Fans speculate the adaptation’s hair loss could be tied to an atomic weapon attack the character is expected to experience in this final chapter. Others say it’s an externalization of his internal ruin or a way for his body to reflect the film’s landscape (a desert) or just another catastrophic consequence of messianic power and part of the aesthetic meta-narrative of being a blind, heartbroken, post-human ruler.
