Under Paris 2 is now filming with Alexandre Aja at the helm

Under Paris, a shark thriller from genre regular Xavier Gens, was released through the Netflix streaming service in June of 2024 (you can read our review HERE) and turned out to have the best launch for a non-English language film on Netflix, drawing in more than 102.3 million views. So it was no surprise that a sequel was announced by the end of 2024. Now, Variety reports that production is officially underway on Under Paris 2 – and to mark the occasion, a teaser poster has been unveiled! You can check it out at the bottom of this article.

What was Under Paris about?

In case you need a refresher, the official Under Paris synopsis reads: After a dangerous shark nicknamed Lilith kills all of Sophia’s research colleagues, the scientist (Bérénice Bejo) gives up studying climate-related shark mutations. But five years later, an environmental activist named Mika (Léa Léviant) discovers a massive shark lurking in the Seine just days before the World Triathlon Championships are hosted in Paris — and it’s the same one Sophia was tracking. So the scientist warily dives back into her work in order to thwart catastrophe. Now it’s up to Sophia, Mika, and reluctant police officer Adil (Nassim Lyes) to prevent a bloodbath before it’s too late.

What is Under Paris 2 about?

For the sequel, Gens has passed the helm over to fellow genre regular Alexandre Aja, whose previous credits include Piranha 3D and Crawl. Gens and Aja wrote the screenplay for Under Paris 2 with Gregory Levasseur, Frédéric Garcia, William Laboury, and Fanny Talmone.

The synopsis: Three years after the Paris triathlon disaster, the center of the Capital is submerged. Sophia and Adil reunite for a high-risk mission: to track Lilith, the original predator, in the shark-infested Seine. There, they will discover that the deadly wildlife hides a much more surprising reality…

Bérénice Bejo and Nassim Lyes reprise the roles of Sophia and Adil, and they are joined in the cast by Guillaume Gouix, Phillippe Bas, Manon Bresch, and Anne Marivin.

Vincent Roget is producing the film, with Gens and Aja as associate producers.

What has been said about Under Paris 2?

Aja provided the following statement: “I love Paris, and I always wanted to make a shark movie, so it was an obvious yes when the opportunity came to take the story even deeper.“
