Veronica Roth Returns To “Divergent” Universe With Two New Alternate Reality Books

Fifteen years after launching the blockbuster “Divergent” series, author Veronica Roth is returning to the dystopian world that made her a household name. At BookCon in New York City on Saturday, Roth revealed she’s written a new companion duology set in an “alternate universe” where the franchise’s beloved heroine Tris Prior makes a fundamentally different choice at her Choosing Ceremony. The announcement sent waves through the young adult fiction community, as fans have long wondered about the paths not taken by characters who shaped a generation of dystopian literature. This return marks Roth’s most significant engagement with the Divergent universe since the original trilogy concluded in 2013.

The first book, titled “The Sixth Faction,” arrives October 6 and can be read as a standalone novel while offering franchise fans a fresh perspective on familiar characters and conflicts. “Not a prequel, not a sequel, not a spinoff, not a different POV but an alternate universe of Divergent where Tris chooses a different faction,” Roth explained to USA Today. The author described the central question driving the narrative as “who is Tris without Dauntless,” exploring how identity forms when foundational choices diverge from established canon. Whereas the original trilogy saw Tris choose Dauntless, the faction of bravery, this new timeline thrusts her into an underground rebellion after tragedy strikes at her Choosing Ceremony, where she still encounters Tobias ‘Four’ Eaton under vastly different circumstances.

Roth expressed particular excitement about how existing fans will experience the interplay between familiar elements and fresh storytelling. “For existing fans, I’m excited for them to see how the old and the new fold together,” she teased. “You’d think that certain things wouldn’t happen because she makes a different faction choice, but she does find her way to the same people. Seeing how that happens is a really fun part of it.” This approach suggests the duology will explore concepts of destiny versus choice, examining whether certain relationships and conflicts are inevitable regardless of initial decisions.

The mysterious boy Tobias ‘Four’ Eaton, Tris’ love interest in the original books, appears in The Sixth Faction under circumstances that differ dramatically from their canon first meeting. How their relationship develops when stripped of the Dauntless initiation context promises to be one of the duology’s most compelling aspects for longtime fans invested in their dynamic.

In the original trilogy, Divergent (2011), Insurgent (2012), and Allegiant (2013), Tris Prior navigates life in post-apocalyptic Chicago, where society divides into five factions based on dominant personality traits. Discovering she’s Divergent, meaning she doesn’t fit neatly into one category, Tris must conceal her status as factional tensions escalate into full-scale war. The series became a cultural phenomenon, spawning a film franchise starring Shailene Woodley as Tris in “Divergent” (2014), “The Divergent Series: Insurgent” (2015), and “The Divergent Series: Allegiant” (2016).

Lionsgate planned a fourth film, Ascendant, which was never produced despite the franchise’s commercial success. Roth previously expanded the universe with the 2014 short story collection Four, and the 2018 short story “We Can Be Mended,” both told from Four’s perspective, giving readers deeper insight into the character who became nearly as beloved as Tris herself.

What This Means for Divergent Fans

The alternate universe approach allows Roth to revisit her most successful creation without retreading familiar ground or contradicting established canon. Fans who felt the original trilogy’s conclusion left questions unanswered now have permission to explore “what if” scenarios that respect both the source material and their emotional investment in these characters.

The companion duology format suggests a complete story arc across two books rather than an open-ended return, giving readers confidence that this new journey has intentional structure and resolution. As The Sixth Faction’s October 6 release approaches, the Divergent fandom prepares to discover whether Tris’ identity truly depends on her faction choice or whether some fundamental aspects of character transcend circumstances.
