Walton Goggins is lighting the world on fire with his performance in the second season of Fallout, but seven years ago, he starred in another video game adaptation that’s blowing up on streaming charts. In 2018, Goggins starred opposite Alicia Vikander and Dominic West in Tomb Raider, the action-adventure epic following the famous Lara Croft (Vikander), who pushes beyond her limits to learn about her father’s disappearance. Tomb Raider is streaming for free on Pluto TV and Tubi in America, but the film recently arrived on Netflix globally, where it’s ranked in the top 10 in more than 15 countries around the world.

Many felt Warner Bros. wasn’t justified in spending nearly $100 million to make Tomb Raider in 2018 — the film had a $94 million budget — but it largely paid off. Tomb Raider grossed $274 million worldwide, nearly tripling its budget and becoming a financial hit for Warner Bros. The film was panned by both critics and audiences, though, earning scores of 52% and 55% on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes. Vikander replaced Angelina Jolie in the role of Lara Croft, who starred in a pair of movies with other action stars like Gerard Butler in the early 2000s.

This success for Tomb Raider isn’t a mere coincidence. Goggins is also the headlining star of another video game adaptation, Fallout, which is taking over streaming charts on Prime Video. Goggins stars as The Ghoul in the Prime Video original series, which is inspired by all the Fallout games and not a direct adaptation of one of them. Fallout also stars Ella Purnell and Kyle MacLachlan, and it’s even been renewed for Season 3.

What’s Going On With the New ‘Tomb Raider’ Show?

Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny) is working on a new Tomb Raider project for Amazon, which has cast Sophie Turner in the lead role of Lara Croft. Turner is best known for her role as Sansa Stark in all eight seasons of Game of Thrones. Other names, such as Sigourney Weaver and Jason Isaacs, have also joined the cast in undisclosed roles. It’s unclear when the show will be released, but it’s expected to begin production sometime next year. Game developer Crystal Dynamics also has a hand in the project.
