Why Masters of the Universe 2 Could Still Happen Despite Box Office Crash – Comic Book Movies and Superhero Movie News – SuperHeroHype

The theatrical run of Masters of the Universe may not have delivered the box office results many expected, but a sequel could still remain a possibility. Despite its disappointing run, reports indicate that Amazon MGM Studios is not relying solely on box office success. As the movie moves beyond theaters, the franchise’s future remains uncertain.

Box office failure may not stop a Masters of the Universe sequel

The disappointing theatrical performance of Masters of the Universe may not prevent the franchise from continuing. Despite earning only $102.4 million worldwide against a reported $170 million production budget, the film could still have a future. This is due to Amazon MGM Studios’ distribution strategy and its value to Prime Video after leaving theaters.

According to Forbes, Amazon is looking beyond box office revenue when judging the project. The film will get another chance to reach viewers on digital platforms and Prime Video, where it could help attract or keep subscribers. If it performs well after its digital release, a sequel could still happen. The alternative approaches also include a lower-budget follow-up or a streaming-exclusive continuation.

Amazon MGM Studios executive Kevin Wilson previously said, “This weekend represents a very solid start for Masters of the Universe and the passionate, multigenerational audience response we’re seeing around the world has been fantastic,” he said. Wilson added that the opening weekend supported the studio’s “holistic distribution strategy” and would help generate awareness beyond the theatrical window.

The studio has already left the door open for sequel. One of the most significant developments comes with the introduction of Princess Adora, He-Man’s long-lost twin sister. Better known to fans as She-Ra, the character became a major part of the franchise through her own animated series during the 1980s.

While Masters of the Universe struggled commercially, it has performed considerably better with viewers. The film currently holds a 68 percent critics score and an 86 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
