Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta lambasted the referee’s decision to overturn a penalty he had originally awarded his side that denied it victory in the first leg of its Champions League semifinal against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday.
After consulting the VAR, referee Danny Makkelie overturned the penalty he had awarded when Eberechi Eze appeared to have his toe stepped on in the second half, and the game ended 1-1.
Arteta argued that there was clear contact and said the fact that the referee had to watch the replay several times before reversing his decision was proof that it should have stood.
“What I’m incredibly fuming about is how the hell the penalty on Ebs gets overturned,” Arteta said. “If you have to watch it 13 times…That’s a goal that can change the course of the season. This cannot happen.”

Arteta said that he accepted the penalty awarded to Atletico after the ball bounced off Ben White’s leg on to his hand, even though it would not have been awarded in the Premier League. Julian Alvarez converted, equalising in the 56th minute.
“The same way we have to accept Ben White’s penalty, Ebs’s is a clear penalty,” he said.
Arteta said he was proud of how his team withstood a raucous atmosphere in Madrid even if he lamented that Arsenal’s task would have been easier in the second leg next Tuesday if the penalty had stood.
“It’s all to play for in London,” he said.

Mandatory Credit: Kirby Lee-Imagn Images Nkosi Tafari’s free kick from the left flank in second-half stoppage time lifted host Los Angeles FC to a 2-1 win over Toluca FC on Wednesday in the first leg of a CONCACAF Champions Cup semifinal series.
The two-leg, total-goal series will conclude May 6 at Toluca de Lerdo, Mexico.
Just after the regulation 90 minutes expired, Tafari sent his free kick through a crowded penalty area and saw it sneak inside the near post despite the dive of Toluca goalie Luis Garcia.
LAFC’s Timothy Tillman opened the scoring in the 51st minute. Son Heung-Min laid the ball off to him at the top of the 18-yard box. Tillman chested the ball down and sent a right-footed half-volley inside the left post.
Jesus Angulo curled in a long-range goal in the 73rd minute as Toluca pulled even. His 18-yard, right-footed effort beat Los Angeles goalie Hugo Lloris inside the right post.
LAFC are two-time CONCACAF Champions Cup runners-up (2020, 2023), but they have yet to win the continental competition. Toluca won the event in 1968 and 2003 and has been runner-up three times.

South African trio Faf du Plessis, Jonty Rhodes and Heinrich Klaasen have formed a consortium to acquire the Rotterdam franchise in a new European Twenty20 league, organisers said on Thursday.
Former Proteas skipper Du Plessis will also lead the side in the inaugural season of the six-team European T20 Premier League (ETPL), which is set to run from August 26 to September 20 across six European cities.
“This is my first step into team ownership, and the timing couldn’t be better with European cricket gaining real momentum,” Du Plessis said in a statement.
“Having experienced franchise leagues across the world, I see immense potential in what the ETPL is building. I’m looking forward to contributing both on and off the field and helping shape a strong cricketing culture within our team.”
Huib van Walsem, chief executive officer of the Dutch cricket association (KNCB), hailed the development as a major boost for cricket in the Netherlands.
“At KNCB, we have long believed in the immense potential of the Dutch cricketing ecosystem, and the involvement of such experienced cricket figures will bring both competitive cricket and attract quality talent to the region,” he said.
Former Australia captain Steve Waugh, compatriot Glenn Maxwell, New Zealanders Kyle Mills and Nathan McCullum, and West Indies stalwart Chris Gayle are among the other co-owners in the T20 league.
The competition will also feature city-based franchises in Glasgow, Amsterdam, Edinburgh, Dublin and Belfast.
“The league continues to gather momentum with globally respected names investing in its vision,” ETPL co-owner and Bollywood actor Abhishek Bachchan said.
“Ownership groups like this set the standard for what the ETPL aims to create, both on and off the field. Together, we are committed to building something truly transformative for the sport in Europe.”
The success of the Indian Premier League has inspired similar competitions around the world. The money on offer at franchise-based leagues has led some players to prioritise the format over Tests and ODIs.

The Canadian government will allocate up to $145 million for security during the upcoming World Cup, Canada’s public safety minister announced on Wednesday.
Thirteen matches are set to take place in Toronto and Vancouver during the June 11-July 19 tournament, which Canada is hosting alongside the U.S. and Mexico.
“This funding will support provinces and municipalities in their efforts to ensure people remain safe while enjoying the tournament, and ensure law enforcement agencies have the resources they need to deliver a safe and well-managed event,” Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree said at a news conference in Toronto.
Toronto will see about $45 million of the money, while $100 million will be set aside for Vancouver.
The investment builds on the $220 million the federal government has already allocated to the Canadian host cities.
Ottawa previously allocated up to $320 million for hosting the tournament. (

Apr 29, 2026; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA; Philadelphia Flyers goalie Dan Vladar (80) reacts with teammates against the Pittsburgh Penguins after game six of the first round of the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs at Xfinity Mobile Arena. Mandatory Credit: Kyle Ross-Imagn Images Cam York scored at 17:32 of overtime, propelling the Philadelphia Flyers into the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs with a 1-0 victory over the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 6 on Wednesday.
After winning the first three games of the best-of-seven series, the Flyers lost Games 4 and 5 and struggled to find their offensive footing for much of Game 6. However, York’s first career playoff goal came at the perfect time, sending Philadelphia into a second-round matchup with the Carolina Hurricanes.
Following a faceoff win in the offensive zone, York unleashed a wrist shot from the right point that got through traffic, hit off the right post, and skipped past Arturs Silovs. The Pittsburgh goalie finished with 31 saves, while Dan Vladar turned aside 42 shots for his second shutout of the series.
Late in overtime, a shot by Philadelphia’s Porter Martone toward an open net was somehow stopped by Silovs’ stick that was lying on the ice. However, the Flyers won the game less than a minute later.
Golden Knights 5, Mammoth 4 (2 OT)
Brett Howden scored a short-handed goal at 5:28 in the second overtime as Vegas took a 3-2 lead in its Western Conference first-round playoff against Utah in Las Vegas.
The Golden Knights’ Pavel Dorofeyev scored a hat trick, including a 6-on-5 goal with 52.7 seconds left in regulation to force overtime. Shea Theodore had a goal and an assist and Jack Eichel logged two assists for Vegas. Carter Hart finished with 34 saves.
John Marino, Lawson Crouse, Dylan Guenther and Michael Carcone scored goals and Clayton Keller had two assists for Utah. Karel Vejmelka made 31 saves.
Canadiens 3, Lightning 2
Alexandre Texier netted a tiebreaking goal early in the third period as visiting Montreal took control of its Eastern Conference first-round playoff series by holding off Tampa Bay in Game 5.
The Canadiens grabbed a 3-2 edge in the best-of-seven series, and they head home to Montreal for Game 6 on Friday.
Canadiens goalie Jakub Dobes wound up with 38 saves. Brendan Gallagher and Kirby Dach also scored for Montreal. Andrei Vasilevskiy made 21 saves for the Lightning, who got goals from Dominic James and Jake Guentzel.
