Mandatory Credit: Troy Taormina-Imagn Images While a handful of sterling defensive plays bolstered the pitching line on Thursday, the Houston Astros unquestionably displayed improved performances on the mound in the final two games of their three-game interleague series against the visiting Colorado Rockies.
The Astros’ 3-2 loss snapped their seven-game home winning streak. However, after entering the series with the most runs allowed in the majors, Houston stacked a strong pitching effort on top of its 3-1 victory on Wednesday in advance of a three-game interleague series against the visiting St. Louis Cardinals that begins on Friday.
“We are pounding the zone,” Astros manager Joe Espada said. “There’s a plan, and we just need to be better at executing that. It’ll come. We’ve just got to continue to push and help those guys to get through it.”
Right-hander Peter Lambert will make his season debut for the Astros in the series opener. He posted a 1.84 ERA in three appearances (two starts) with Triple-A Sugar Land before being added to the major league taxi squad on Thursday. Lambert, 28, last pitched in the majors in 2024, when he went 2-5 with a 5.72 ERA in 28 appearances (three starts) for the Rockies.
In his lone career appearance against the Cardinals, Lambert allowed four runs (two earned) on six hits and four walks in 4 1/3 innings while taking an 8-3 loss with the Rockies on Aug. 23, 2019.
Right-hander Kyle Leahy (1-2, 5.14 ERA) is the scheduled starter for the Cardinals on Friday. He was the pitcher of record in a 7-1 loss to the Boston Red Sox on Saturday after permitting two runs on three hits and three walks with two strikeouts over four innings.
Leahy has a 3.18 ERA in three career relief appearances against the Astros. He faced Houston twice last season and allowed one run on two hits with three strikeouts in three innings.
The Cardinals won the decisive match of their three-game series with the Cleveland Guardians 5-3 on Wednesday, claiming an afternoon affair after winning in walk-off fashion late Tuesday. St. Louis split its six-game homestand before embarking upon a six-game road trip.
Jordan Walker, who is tied for the major league lead in home runs (eight) and total bases (49), extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a ninth-inning double in the series finale. Rookie JJ Wetherholt smacked a pair of homers in the Tuesday victory before walking twice and driving in a run on Wednesday.
In short order, the Cardinals have showcased a personality they hope will define their season.
“The one thing we wanted to anchor to and be committed to was the style of play and our preparation,” St. Louis manager Oliver Marmol said. “And that’s what I’ll continue to point to when we talk about Walker, JJ … like all these guys. You’re building something that’s going to be fun to watch for a long time here, and you have to go about it the right way.
“And that’s what we’re committed to. Can we win those small moments and continue to stack them? I feel like our group continues to do that, and we can’t let up, regardless of what the outcome of the game is. Those are those little moments that we have to continue to win.”

It may still be early in the season, but Mumbai Indians has already drifted into troubled waters, managing just one win from its first five matches in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
The concern is no longer simmering; it’s out in the open. Following a seven-wicket loss to Punjab Kings at the Wankhede Stadium, captain Hardik Pandya admitted that the team may need to take “difficult calls” if needed.
Even head coach Mahela Jayawardene, typically measured in his assessments, conceded that the side is still searching for the elusive “spark.” He pointed to the bowling unit as a key area of concern but was quick to stress that the responsibility does not lie with the captain alone.
“I don’t think it’s just on Hardik, I think it’s on every one of us when we are not doing well,” Jayawardene said. “It’s not an individual. It’s pretty much on me, everyone involved in the management and all that to see how we can be better.”
Despite insisting that the team hasn’t been completely outplayed, Jayawardene acknowledged that opposition sides have been sharper and more clinical, riding high on confidence. “We need to control the phases we can,” he added.
While the batting unit, particularly Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma, has come under scrutiny for inconsistency, the bigger worry remains the lack of bite in the bowling. Jasprit Bumrah has been economical but wicketless, while Shardul Thakur and Deepak Chahar have failed to make a significant impact.
Jayawardene also pointed to disruptions caused by injuries and availability issues. Rohit Sharma missed the last game due to injury, while Mitchell Santner was sidelined by illness.
“The games we lost were all different, and some combinations were forced upon us,” he said. “We are trying to build with what we have, but we are finding some spark in certain areas, but the other side is finding that especially with the ball…”
With the season already slipping away, Mumbai Indians must regroup quickly and make decisive changes before facing Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad.

Star teenager Gout Gout has qualified fastest for Saturday’s 100-meter semifinals at the Australian junior athletics championships, less than a week after setting an under-20 world record time in the 200 that was faster than Usain Bolt’s best at that age.
The 18-year-old Australian sprinter finished on Friday in a time of 10.19 seconds at the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre. He entered the heats with the best qualifying time of 10.0 seconds.
Local media is reporting Gout has his eye on lowering Patrick Johnson’s national open record for the 100m of 9.93, set in Japan in 2003.
Last Sunday, Gout ran his 200-meter final at the open national titles in 19.67 seconds, taking 0.02 off Erriyon Knighton’s world under-20 mark of 19.69 set at Eugene in 2022.
Knighton also ran a 19.49 in 2022, which World Athletics says is the fastest time ever by an under-20 athlete despite it not being ratified as a world under-20 record.
Gout’s time last week placed him above sprinting great Bolt at No. 2 in the all-time under-20 list.
It was the first time that Gout had gone under the 20-second mark officially, after a wind-assisted 19.84 last season, and is the leading time in the world this year. Gout previously had the quickest time by a 16-year-old, setting an Australian record of 20.06 in 2024.
Last Sunday’s mark in Sydney put him ahead of eight-time Olympic champion Bolt’s time of 19.93 in 2004. Bolt was 17 when setting what was then a world junior record and never bettered that time as a teenager.
“This is what I’ve been waiting for,” Gout, who was born in Queensland state to parents from South Sudan, said after his 200-meter win. “There’s a big weight off my shoulders knowing I ran it legally, and I have the speed and my body to run times like that. So, it definitely feels great, and ready for more.”
Gout has indicated that he will skip the Commonwealth Games, which begin in Glasgow on July 23, to focus on the world under-20 championships in Eugene, Oregon from August 5-9.
Brisbane is hosting the 2032 Olympics, where Gout is likely to be in his prime as a sprinter and could become the star of the Games. He grew up nearby in Ipswich, where he completed high school late last year.

Starbucks is fully embracing AI, launching a beta app in ChatGPT this week that lets a chatbot choose your latte or refresher.
Users on ChatGPT can access the app by starting a prompt with “@Starbucks.” They can then describe the mood they’re in or want to be in — energetic, cozy, etc. — or simply ask the AI to pick something that matches their tastes, like non-dairy drinks or less caffeinated beverages.
In the announcement on Starbucks’ website, the coffee chain also suggested users upload a photo to ChatGPT that “captures your vibe,” and the AI will choose a drink to complement it.
Mashable Trend Report

Some of the prompts suggested by Starbucks include “@Starbucks, I want something bright to start my morning,” and “@Starbucks, I’m craving an afternoon boost that isn’t too sweet.”
After choosing a drink and a store to retrieve it, users will be directed to the Starbucks app or Starbucks.com to pay and complete the order.
Starbucks considers the beta app in ChatGPT its newest way to encourage customers to try new beverages or, as they put it in their press release, “using AI to support something very human: helping you discover a drink you’ll love.”
Disclosure: Ziff Davis, Mashable’s parent company, in April 2025 filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging it infringed Ziff Davis copyrights in training and operating its AI systems.
