Head coach Mahela Jayawardene on Thursday backed Jasprit Bumrah despite the pace ace going wicketless in five matches on the trot, but rued Mumbai Indians’ general ineffectiveness with the ball, especially in the PowerPlay.
Bumrah was smacked for 41 runs in four overs as Punjab Kings chased down the target of 196 with 21 balls and seven wickets to spare in their Indian Premier League (IPL) contest in Mumbai on Thursday.
“Bumrah is bowling well, it is just where we are not putting pressure in the PowerPlay,” Jayawardene told reporters after the match.
“They (opposition) know they don’t need to take too much risk against Bumrah. We tried a few different things, which he is trying as well, but they are batting well. I can’t put a finger (on something) and say that he hasn’t taken a wicket.”
The former Sri Lankan captain revealed that Bumrah carried a niggle at the start of the IPL 2026 but has pulled up well since.
“I think initially because he had a slight niggle which came from the World Cup,” he replied to a query on Bumrah’s inconsistent pace.
“We wanted to build him up (and) over the last few games, his speed has gone up. We’ve looked at all that, so he’s very comfortable. Sometimes, you need a bit of luck as well. (Bumrah) Bowled some really good balls initially to Shreyas (Iyer), but wasn’t lucky enough. Once he starts taking wickets, he might not be able to stop him doing that,” Jayawardene added.
However, Jayawardene did not dismiss the fact that the MI bowlers lacked the precision so far this season.
“But as a (bowling) unit, like I said before, we’ve lacked that penetration in different surfaces and that’s something that we need to work (on) and see what we need to do,” he said.
The head coach said Rohit Sharma’s injury is not serious and the team management doesn’t want to push him as it is “still early stages” of the tournament.
“He started running yesterday (Wednesday), he batted (as well)… taking it day to day to see how he feels. He knows his body better than anybody else. It’s nothing serious, but at the same time, we don’t want to push and it’s early season still, so the medical staff will take that call,” he said.
Jayawardene refused to accept that skipper Hardik Pandya was under pressure with MI losing its fourth match in a row.
“I don’t think it’s just on Hardik, it’s on every one of us. When we’re not doing well, it’s not an individual, it’s pretty much on me, everyone who’s involved in the management to see how can we be better,” he said.
“I know we’re playing good cricket — we’re not taken out completely — but at the same time the other teams are much better, clinical, (and) obviously the confidence is high as well when they have that kind of start,” he added, referring to Arshdeep Singh’s twin strikes that reduced MI to 15 for two at early on.
Jayawardene said it was a tactical call to pair up Quinton de Kock (112) and Ryan Rickelton for the first wicket.
“We do have an Indian opener (as) backup. But the things I have had to go through from yesterday (Wednesday) to today with the illnesses in our group and trying to get the right combination, is something which only I’m privy to,” he said.
“… we’ve had quite a few unfortunate injuries, illnesses within the camp (and because of) that we’ve not been able to get everyone on the park,” he added.
Jayawardene also rued MI losing momentum towards the end with the bat, along with Deepak Chahar’s 21-run first over.
“Quinny (de Kock) batted exceptionally, and it was a good partnership. At the end, we lost a little bit of rhythm; they bowled well to pull it back. I was hoping that we could get to that 210-220 mark if we had a couple of big overs,” he said.
“Losing momentum at the back end, as well as not setting the tone in that first over, probably put us back. (It was) another big over upfront. These are areas that we needed to be sharper (in) and execution-wise it was quite poor,” Jayawardene added.

Apr 16, 2026; Denver, Colorado, USA; Colorado Avalanche defenseman Nick Blankenburg (37) celebrates his goal in the first period against the Seattle Kraken at Ball Arena. Mandatory Credit: Ron Chenoy-Imagn Images Scott Wedgewood made 22 saves for his fourth shutout of the season, Parker Kelly and Nick Blankenburg each scored a goal and the Colorado Avalanche beat the Seattle Kraken 2-0 in Denver on Thursday night.
Valeri Nichushkin had two assists for Colorado (55-16-11, 121 points), which set the franchise record for points. The 55 victories are one fewer than the 2021-22 team, which had 119 points on the way to winning the Stanley Cup.
The shutout was the 12th of Wedgewood’s career. His 2.07 goals-against average led the NHL.
Victor Ostman turned away 33 shots for Seattle (34-37-11, 79 points), which lost its third in a row and finished the season with 13 losses in its last 16 games.
Colorado’s opponent in the first round was determined during the second period when Anaheim beat Nashville. That locked in the Los Angeles Kings as the second wild card and a playoff matchup with the Avalanche for the first time since 2002.
Game 1 is Sunday afternoon in Denver.
Colorado rested several players ahead of the postseason. Nathan MacKinnon, Devon Toews and Martin Necas were healthy scratches, while Nazem Kadri (finger), Gabriel Landeskog (lower body) Josh Manson (upper body) were also out of the lineup.
MacKinnon finished with an NHL-best 53 goals in 80 games and was third overall in scoring with 127 points. He joins Milan Hejduk as the only players in franchise history to win the Rocket Richard Trophy.
Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar, sporting a black eye, was back behind the bench after missing the two-game road trip to Edmonton and Calgary. Bednar suffered facial fractures and a corneal abrasion when he was struck on the right cheek by a puck against Vegas on Saturday.
Blankenburg had a goal in the first period erased when the Kraken successfully challenged the play was offside but his goal at 17:38 of the second stuck and gave Colorado a 1-0 lead.
Kelly scored his 21st of the season at 12:19 of the third.

All-format players are a shrinking breed as cricket’s calendar becomes more crowded then ever but happy to be a part of that tribe, Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar sees it as a “beautiful blessing” rather than a massive challenge.
Washington, who has had to deal with a fair share of injuries in his India career that began in 2017, has been a regular member of the national squad over the past 18 months.
“Being an all-format player for the Indian cricket team is a massive blessing. Because we all know the kind of cricket that the Indian team has always played,” he told PTI in an interview.

“And getting to play three formats is a beautiful blessing. And obviously, looking forward to a lot of more good contributions from myself and eventually win a lot of games for my country,” he said.
The all-rounder played only a couple of games in India’s T20 World Cup campaign at home but delivered notable performances in the longest format.
He came of age in Test cricket with a match-saving hundred alongside Ravindra Jadeja against England in Manchester last year. That gritty effort was followed by an explosive fifty in the fifth and final Test at the Oval where India were able to level the series.
Washington, currently doing the job for Gujarat Titans in the IPL, said he has worked extensively on his fitness in recent past which has helped him get regular opportunities across formats.
He had a side strain leading into the T20 World Cup but was able to recover just in time.
Washington said he knows his body better than ever now and this is helping him stay in shape for top-flight cricket.
“I don’t see too many challenges there. Yes, fitness plays a massive role. And you have got to understand how your body sort of works across situations, across conditions,” he said.
“And obviously, (it helps in) playing different roles and train accordingly. I’ve always given a lot of importance on understanding my own body. And yes, as I said, things have been really good in the last one year,” he said.
The frequent opportunities in red ball cricket have come following the retirement of senior off-spinner R Ashwin during the tour of Australia in 2024-25.
In the shorter formats, he has had to evolve as a batter and that includes polishing his power game.
“Yeah, definitely. I mean, you have got to play different roles slightly differently and understand what’s required of yourself, especially in terms of skills and work accordingly,” he said when asked about the power-hitting aspect of the game.
He hopes to be a part of the ODI World Cup in South Africa next year but the ‘biggest goal’ is to win every game that he plays for India.

Gujarat Titans is Washington’s fourth IPL franchise, having turned up for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, SunRisers Hyderabad and the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiants in the past.
The southpaw has been playing the IPL since 2017 but is yet to fully realise his potential.
The off-spinner has played more than 10 games a season only twice since 2017 with the 2020 edition for RCB being his most productive.
In his first season for Titans last year, he got six games but this year it seems he is on course to play the whole season. He has been batting in the middle order and scored his maiden IPL fifty against Delhi Capitals on April 8.
“Getting to play is the ultimate fun, especially at this level. It’s always a beautiful opportunity. And as a team also, we’ve been doing very well so far.
“I’ve always had enough clarity about what role I’m going to be playing, especially with this franchise. So, that way, it’s always been clear-cut,” added Washington.

Dec 5, 2009; Atlanta, GA, USA; Alabama Crimson Tide defensive lineman Luther Davis (96) celebrates after defeating the Florida Gators 32-13 in the 2009 SEC championship game at the Georgia Dome. Mandatory Credit: Dale Zanine-Imagn Images A former Alabama football player impersonated three NFL players to take out millions of dollars of loans in their names, federal prosecutors contend.
Luther Davis, who played for the Crimson Tide from 2007-10. has been charged with wire fraud and identity theft after he allegedly created false documents and wore wigs to convince lenders that he was one of the players, ESPN reported, citing federal court records.
Davis is alleged to have posed as Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr., former Cleveland Browns tight end David Njoku and Green Bay Packers defensive back Xavier McKinney to obtain nearly $20 million illegally, per the report.
He is alleged to have orchestrated the scam from May 2023 to October 2024 to receive multiple loans. A second person, Georgia business owner CJ Evins, also has been charged with wire fraud and identity theft.
None of the players are suspects in the case. Per the court documents, they did not authorize the financial transactions, and Davis is alleged to have created fake driver’s licenses, email accounts, business records and more to assist with the loan application process.
Davis is due in court on April 27, where AL.com reported he is expected to plead guilty. Evins also intends to plead guilty at the hearing, ESPN reported, citing Evins’ attorney.
According to court documents, Davis and Evins created “fabricated personal financial statements, Secretary of State documents, and bank statements for companies purportedly operated by the players.” Driver’s licenses with fake numbers reportedly were created with headshots of the players found online.
During at least one loan closing, Davis wore makeup and a wig to look like Njoku as he sought a $4 million loan, ESPN reported.
Two months later, on April 1, 2024, Davis allegedly showed up at a meeting in New York City with representatives from the same lender to finalize a $4.4 million loan, this time with McKinney supposedly the applicant.
And then in late July 2024, ESPN reported, Davis is accused of posing as Penix at a meeting in Georgia for a $3.3 million deal, offering a fake driver’s license as proof of identity.
According to court documents, lenders wired more than $19.8 million as part of 13 loans to business accounts that supposedly were owned by the players. Actually, Davis and Evins are alleged to have set up the fake business accounts, then transferred the funds to the accounts for businesses they actually operated.
In 2013, Davis was accused of violating NCAA rules, allegedly serving as the middle man to move impermissible benefits between five college players and NFL agents.
