At the bar where I work, some of the owner’s friends will come by and drink there and hang out. Most of them are stand-up guys and great to serve. Most of them…
One of them is that friend (actually, I think he’s more of a friend of a friend) who seems to think that because he knows the owner, he can do whatever he wants.
Owner’s Friend: “Yo, you got any [Brand] beer?”
Me: “No, that’s not one we stock. If you want a similar flavor profile, we also have—”
Owner’s Friend: “—You know, I also own a bar. Yeah…”
He waits for me to indicate how impressed I am. This obviously does not happen.
Me: “Okay?”
Owner’s Friend: “Well, anyway, we have [Brand] beer, and it’s so much better. You need to stock some.”
Me: “Well, maybe talk to [Owner] about it. I’m only paid to serve what we sell.”
This guy waves me away with a frustrated ‘bah!’ and I shrug and get back to serving.
A little later into the evening, I notice this guy is drinking with his friends and has a few bottles of the brand of beer that we do not sell. I walk over to him.
Me: “Where did you get those?!”
Owner’s Friend: “The liquor store a block over. They sell it, and you don’t, so I thought I would—”
Me: “—You thought you would break the law?!”
Owner’s Friend: “Oh, come on. It’s not that serious.”
Me: “It is a lot that serious. I thought you owned a bar? You should know that this goes waaaay against the rules in our liquor license. This establishment could face large fines, possible suspension of all our licenses to serve, and potentially jail time. I thought you were [Owner]’s friend?”
This guy goes red, and another one of the owner’s friends says:
Other Friend: “Wait, you told [My Name] that you own a bar? Dude, your place was shut down!”
Hmm, I wonder why?
He was kicked out; his friends stayed. When I told the owner what happened, he told me that the guy was never really his friend and was happy he did something that gave him a good reason to ban him.
