On Wednesday night, 12 Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) senior fashion design students unveiled their work during the art school’s annual end-of-year runway show. This year’s cohort was: Azaria VanDerStok-Smallwood, Cali Kircher, Day Koo, Ellia Baldwin, Ji Hu Park, Liam St.Clair-Rounds, Mariam Devadze, Maya Muravlev, Micaela Giulianelli, Nerukessa, Paige Sias and Zoe Goldemberg.
Each designer created at least a six-piece collection, and while their approaches were unique, a common thread was the exploration of materiality. From innovative uses of knitwear to deconstructed denim to textile patchworking, each designer clearly brought hand craft to the forefront.
“[Every senior is] given time to experiment with and develop their ideas — free from the constraints of commercial logic — producing bespoke work that demonstrates meticulous attention to material selection,” Apparel Design Department Head Gwen Van Den Eijnde said in a press statement. “Each of our graduating students has a unique signature that celebrates the intelligence of the human hand…These collections invite us into imaginative and largely joyful worlds. Amid the challenging realities of today’s world, we are all in need of hope, joy and optimism.”
