Mickey Rourke has denied involvement in a GoFundMe page set up to pay for his rent, the Oscar nominee saying he’s “frustrated” by the development. Following the actor’s eviction from a rental property in Los Angeles, a GoFundMe page was set up for Rourke to pay his back rent, which the page claims totals to $60,000.
Now, Deadline reports Rourke has taken to Instagram to deny his involvement in the GoFundMe page set up for his rent. The actor holds his dog, Lucky, as he talks about how he doesn’t want anyone donating to the GoFundMe page. He claims not to know who set up the page in his name, but that he doesn’t want charitable donations.
Despite the GoFundMe page claiming to have been set up with his permission, Rourke claims this isn’t the case. Instead, he says that he’ll be speaking to his lawyers in order to get to the bottom of what’s going on. However, in his video, he also confirms that he is struggling monetarily, but that he doesn’t want public help:
Somebody set up some kind of foundation or fund for me to donate money, like charity. And that’s not me, ok? If I needed money, I wouldn’t ask for no f*****g charity. Whoever did this…I don’t know why they did it. I wouldn’t know what a GoFund foundation is in a million years.
Don’t give any money. And if you gave money, get it back.
I’m going to talk to my lawyer…and get to the bottom of this.
Despite his frustration with the situation, the GoFundMe page was set up by Kimberly Hines, Rourke’s long-time manager, and her assistant, Liya-Joelle Jones. Hines explained to Deadline the page wasn’t set up with any negative ideas in mind, instead trying to help the actor after he suddenly had nowhere to live and was being denied movers and storage:
We’re trying to do the best that we can.
My assistant started it to help Mickey as a nice gesture because he was being forced out of his home. It was not done with any mal intent. The money has not gone anywhere. If Mickey decides he does not want it, the money will be returned to his fans.
According to the actor, who opens up about his struggles in the video, his rental recently came under the ownership of “two scumbags from New York” who refused to fix issues with the property. In response, Rourke stopped paying his rent. He also admitted to needing to borrow money from a friend recently due to his mismanaged funds.
Luckily, it seems Rourke could make a comeback in his career soon, with Hines confirming he’s been getting offers for new roles. While they’re unlikely to be as high-profile as ones like the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the past, his roles in movies like The Wrestler means he’ll probably earn a lot for anything he decides to take.
As for the fate of the GoFundMe, it was clearly set up with good intentions, wanting to assist the actor in his time of need. At the same time, though, without his express permission given for the charitable act, it’s unknown how much support it’ll get. He appears to not want the public’s help, though, regardless of his current financial burden.
