“Backrooms” Takes $10 Million In Previews

A24

A24’s “Backrooms” liminal horror movie could make movie history this weekend.

The Kane Parsons-directed feature film adaptation of Parsons’ viral found footage video series reportedly pulled in $10.4 million in Thursday night previews at the U.S. domestic box-office.

That’s about on par with “Five Nights at Freddy’s” ($10.3 million) and has pushed opening weekend projections even higher, with estimates now rising from the previous $40-50 million range to $65-80 million.

Shot for a budget of just under $10 million, some are even suggesting the film has a shot at an opening weekend towards the $100 million mark.

The main issue is that no one is sure how frontloaded the film is. The box-office is going to be watched daily very carefully, but the film certainly is tracking extremely popular with under-25s of both genders. Funnily enough, very few over 35s are attending going by the figures.

It marks the third recent film from a YouTube creator turned filmmaker following Markiplier’s “Iron Lung” earlier this year and Curry Barker’s “Obsession” last week, which actually beat out Lucasfilm’s “The Mandalorian and Grogu” on Wednesday.
