Benjamin Alire Sáenz, first Latino winner of PEN/Faulkner award, dies aged 71

Benjamin Alire Sáenz, an award-winning fiction writer and poet who drew upon his sexuality and his life on the southern border, has died at age 71. He was the first Latino to win the PEN/Faulkner prize.

Sáenz, who produced a story collection that won the PEN/Faulkner prize and a young adult novel that received acclaim from readers and reviewers and condemnation from censors, died on 28 July in El Paso, Texas, after a lengthy illness, according to a spokesperson for Simon & Schuster.

Sáenz, born in Old Picacho, New Mexico, was an ordained Catholic priest who eventually left the order and came out as gay. Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe, the story of two Mexican American boys falling in love, was published in 2012 and received a pair of citations for outstanding LGBTQ+ literature: a Stonewall book award and the Lambda literary award.

In a tribute posted to the late author’s Instagram account on Saturday, Sáenz is described as a writer whose words ensured visibility and belonging among people who have been pushed into the margins of society.

“Ben believed that words could build bridges where walls once stood. He believed that every life mattered, every story deserved to be told, and every soul longed to be seen,” the post reads. “He wrote of lonely boys who discovered they were worthy of love. He wrote of deserts, rivers, family, memory, grief, forgiveness, and hope…But more than anything, he wrote toward the light.”

This sentiment was echoed by playwright Lin-Manuel Miranda, who narrated the audio edition of Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe, helped produce the 2023 film adaptation, and lent his voice to the audiobook for Sáenz’s sequel novel Aristotle and Dante Dive into the Waters of the World.

“Heartbroken by the passing of [Benjamin Alire Sáenz]. Forever grateful he trusted me to narrate both audiobooks of Aristotle & Dante’s adventures…Condolences to his galaxy of friends and family. Rest easy, maestro,” Miranda wrote in an Instagram post the day after Sáenz’s death.

The film adaptation’s director, Aitch Alberto, also posted a tribute to the man whom she described as more than just an author.

“He was a friend, a believer in me, and one of the greatest supporters of my work and my voice. He trusted me with Ari and Dante, with characters and a world that came from somewhere so deeply personal to him, and that trust changed the course of my life,” she wrote.

Though Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe is considered a part of the LGBTQIA+ literary canon, the love story at its center led to its temporary removal from a school district in Granbury, Texas, and to bans in Russia and in Belarus.

Sáenz’s other books included the poetry collection The Book of What Remains and such adult novels as In Perfect Light and Names on a Map.

He received the PEN/Faulkner award in 2013 for Everything Begins and Ends at the Kentucky Club, a story collection set in El Paso, and across the border in Juarez, Mexico. Starting in the 1990s, he taught for decades at the University of Texas at El Paso, where he had received a master’s degree in creative writing.

He served as chair of the school’s creative writing department before retiring in 2016.

Next month, Simon & Schuster will publish When the World Was Happy, which draws in part upon the loss of his niece in 1990 in a bowling alley shooting in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Sáenz was reminded of that tragedy by the 2022 school shooting in Uvalde, Texas.

“That was when I decided that this was not gonna leave me alone until I wrote about it,” he wrote in an author’s note shared by the publisher. “I wanted to write a book about how people survive and live through something as senseless as this.”

The SpaceX Falcon Lunar Crash Is a Warning for Moon Bases<div><p><span class="lead-in-text-callout">A SpaceX rocket</span> that has been drifting in space for a year and a half is set to <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/spacex-falcon-9-rocket-crash-into-moon/" class="text link">crash into the moon</a> on Wednesday, stirring up a debris cloud that could be visible from Earth. The impact raises questions on the future of lunar exploration, including how to protect any future moon bases from space junk.</p><p class="paywall">The rocket set for moon impact is the upper stage of a Falcon 9 that transported a <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/a-private-space-mission-has-successfully-landed-on-the-moon-for-the-first-time-blue-ghost-firefly-aerospace/" class="text link">pair of lunar landers</a>. While the landers successfully reached the surface, the rocket was left adrift since it did not have enough fuel to return to Earth or enter a stable orbit.</p><p class="paywall">Weighing 4 metric tons, the rocket is expected to strike the lunar surface at a speed of approximately 5,400 mph—about seven times the speed of sound. Without an atmosphere to slow the projectile down, the impact will cause an explosion equivalent to 3 metric tons of TNT, leaving a crater that’s projected to be up to 27 meters in diameter and 5 meters deep.</p><p class="paywall">The upper stage is expected to hit the surface around 6:34 am UTC on Wednesday, likely making impact near Einstein Crater on the western edge of the moon’s near side. The Americas will have the best view of this impact. While it won’t be visible to the naked eye, viewers should be able to spot the debris plume through a good telescope for a few minutes.</p><p class="paywall">A lunar crash landing visible from Earth will be a spectacle, one that raises concerns about the future of the moon. Multiple countries are planning uncrewed lunar missions, which could clutter the area around the moon. This SpaceX rocket won’t be the first to accidentally crash into the moon. In March 2022, a Chinese Long March 3C rocket also <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/how-to-deal-with-rocket-boosters-and-other-giant-space-garbage/" class="text link">struck the lunar surface</a> and left a crater that’s 29 meters wide.</p><p class="paywall">China and the US are also pushing to build bases on the surface in the coming decades.</p><p class="paywall">Bill Gray, the creator of the <a data-offer-url="https://www.projectpluto.com/" class="external-link text link" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLink","outgoingURL":"https://www.projectpluto.com/"}" href="https://www.projectpluto.com/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Project Pluto</a> initiative to develop software and tools to track the orbits of asteroids, comets, and artificial satellites, was the first to calculate the trajectory of the impending Falcon 9 crash. He was also part of a team that worked on <a data-offer-url="https://arxiv.org/pdf/2607.14625" class="external-link text link" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLink","outgoingURL":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/2607.14625"}" href="https://arxiv.org/pdf/2607.14625" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">a preprint study</a> released last month detailing the collision.</p><p class="paywall">The crash landing is ”an opportunity to test pipelines for measuring flash properties to locate impact events seismically, and to better understand the multi-modal hazards posed to future lunar infrastructure and astronauts from space debris impacting the Moon,” the study states.</p><p class="paywall">Although building a moon research center capable of supporting a sustained human presence will take at least a decade, NASA’s missions to construct the first facilities are expected to launch in the coming years as part of the Artemis program.</p><p class="paywall">“These sorts of things are going to happen more and more often. And as we have more astronauts on the lunar surface, more lunar infrastructure habitats, for example, we need to understand how much of a risk these impact events actually pose,” Benjamin Fernando, a researcher at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico and coauthor of the preprint study, tells <a data-offer-url="https://abcnews.com/US/piece-spacex-rocket-hit-moon/story?id=135225250" class="external-link text link" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLink","outgoingURL":"https://abcnews.com/US/piece-spacex-rocket-hit-moon/story?id=135225250"}" href="https://abcnews.com/US/piece-spacex-rocket-hit-moon/story?id=135225250" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">ABC News</a>.</p><p class="paywall">The risk posed by space debris is part of a growing list of hazards that cast doubt on the safety of any long-term project on the moon.
