Mumbai Indians all-rounder Shardul Thakur came in as a concussion substitute in place of Mitchell Santner during the side’s IPL 2026 match against Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday.

Santner had hurt his shoulder during the first innings and gone off the field. The Kiwi international had suffered the injury during the 17th over while taking Kartik Sharma’s catch.

However, replays showed Santner’s head hit the ground while attempting the catch. He had bowled his four overs by then, conceding 44 runs and picking one wicket.

By this point, Mumbai had already used its Impact Player option, getting in Danish Malewar in place of Allah Ghazanfar.

Shardul could only manage six runs off 12 balls as the Indians faltered in their chase of 208 and lost by 103 runs.
