Al-Shaair is the third key defensive player to sign an extension this offseason. All-Pro defensive end Will Anderson Jr. got a three-year, $150 million deal and five-time Pro Bowl edge rusher Danielle Hunter signed a one-year, $40.1 million deal.


Al-Shaair, 28, whose current deal was set to expire after the 2026 season, is tied to the franchise through 2029.

“This place is special. The people are special,” Al-Shaair said, per KPRC2. “A sense of family is hard to come by. Who would have thought I would make it to the NFL? I went through homelessness. I went to several schools. I couldn’t see myself putting on a uniform with anybody else.”

George Russell said he is treating his battle for the Formula 1 world championship with Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli like a marathon.

As the schedule resumes with Sunday’s Miami Grand Prix, Italy’s Antonelli holds a nine-point lead over England’s Russell with Monaco’s Charles Leclerc of Ferrari another 14 points back in third place.

“It made me think — the guy who’s running the London Marathon after three miles isn’t thinking about the finish line because he’s got 23 miles to go. We’re in race four of the season so it’s not even a consideration,” Russell said Friday when asked about trailing his teammate.

“Of course (Kimi)’s done an amazing job so far this year. The last race was a little bit unfortunate from my side but these things go one way one weekend and swing back later in the year. I’m experienced enough to know how a Championship works and there’s a long way ahead.”

After Russell won the March 7 season opener in Australia, Antonelli finished first in both China on March 15 and Japan on March 28 before the next two races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia were canceled due to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.


Russell, 28, said the main thing is to keep both Mercedes running at the front.

“It’s pretty clear — we fight each other hard, but we fight each other fair,” he said when asked about the team’s approach. “Right now, there’s lots of talk about the fight between Kimi and I, but we also need to make sure that we continue being the ones to beat.”

Danny Jansen slugged a solo homer and Josh Jung had two hits and two RBIs for Texas, which moved ahead on back-to-back doubles by Jake Burger and Osuna with one out in the eighth against Burch Smith (0-1). Tyler Alexander (1-0), one of five Texas relievers, pitched a scoreless seventh inning for the win. Jacob Latz retired the Tigers in order in the ninth for his third save. Riley Greene had two hits and an RBI for Detroit, which has lost three of its last four. Wenceel Perez added a two-run single. Texas claimed a 1-0 run in the first inning against Jack Flaherty when Brandon Nimmo singled to begin the game and scored from second on Jung’s two-out single to left field. The Rangers tacked on three runs in the third. Jansen began the inning by depositing a 2-1 slider into the left field seats for his second homer of the season. Flaherty issued three straight walks to Nimmo, Evan Carter and Corey Seager before the Rangers scored twice on Jung’s single and Joc Pederson’s sacrifice fly. Nimmo singled in the fourth inning before exiting the game with right hamstring tightness. Flaherty gave up four runs on five hits over 3 2/3 innings. He walked three and struck out four. Detroit cut into the deficit with three runs in the bottom of the fourth against Texas starter MacKenzie Gore. Spencer Torkelson drew a two-out walk to load the bases before Perez singled in two runs and Hao-Yu Lee delivered an RBI single. With runners on the corners, Cole Winn replaced Gore and struck out Gleyber Torres to end the inning. Gore allowed three runs on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts over 3 2/3 innings. The Tigers pulled even with a run in the fifth.
