Paramount Pictures is officially drawing a big red bloody heart around the date for Heart Eyes 2. The sequel to last year’s unexpected horror rom-com hit is now confirmed for a global release on February 11, 2028, just in time for the Heart Eyes killer to make his return ahead of Valentine’s Day. Josh Ruben will once again be at the helm, not only directing but also co-writing the script with Darcy Fowler, based on a story by the also-returning Christopher Landon and Michael Kennedy. The reunions don’t stop there, as Paramount is also teaming with Spyglass Media Group, its go-to Scream partner, to make this romantic slasher return a reality.
A second date for Heart Eyes isn’t entirely surprising. Sony Pictures found perfect chemistry with the original film, earning a very solid $33.1 million at the box office on a reported budget of just $18 million. Critics and audiences fell in love, too, giving it a similar 78% and 76% scores on Rotten Tomatoes, respectively. Collider’s Aidan Kelley was among those smitten by the film in his 7/10 review, saying it succeeds primarily because “the two leads are so charming, the jokes are genuinely funny, and the kills are delightfully gory.” The sequel is now set to once again give couples another holiday-themed, genre-bending gore fest, with the only major competition being a yet unknown Universal event film.
At this point, nobody is attached to star in Heart Eyes 2, and there’s been no indication of where the story could go. The original blurred the line between rom-com and slasher as it followed cynical pitch designer Ally (Olivia Holt) and her hopelessly romantic and charming colleague, Jay (Mason Gooding). After being partnered together for a campaign, they find themselves the latest target of the Heart Eyes Killer, who cuts down unsuspecting couples on Valentine’s Day. Caught up in the misunderstanding, they decide to fight back and, perhaps, forge real chemistry along the way. The rest of the cast also featured Gigi Zumbado, Michaela Watkins, Devon Sawa, and Jordana Brewster.
Does ‘Heart Eyes’ Set Up for a Sequel?
Although slasher sequels are all too common and often successful, as seen with Paramount’s record-setting Scream 7, Heart Eyes subverted expectations yet again with a mid-credits scene that didn’t set up the killer’s return. The now happy couple of Ally and Olivia does receive a sinister phone call, but it’s all a prank by Ally’s friend, Monica (Zumbado). Any follow-up, then, has a bit of freedom with what direction it could go. Holt and Gooding could return, or perhaps the focus could shift to another unfortunate couple. Whatever the case, with Ruben and the rest of the team returning, and Fowler, who previously created the Danny and Lucy DeVito-led series Little Demon, joining the fold, all the key pieces are in place to make another bloody romantic hit.
Heart Eyes 2 arrives on February 11, 2028. Stay tuned here at Collider for further updates.
