Godfather of Harlem to end after four seasons with a two-hour series finale

It’s been over a year since the season four finale of Godfather of Harlem, and fans have been wondering whether the show would be coming back. MGM+ announced today that Godfather of Harlem won’t be back for another season, but, thankfully, it will receive a two-hour series finale to bring the crime saga to a close.

Godfather of Harlem Series Finale

The two-hour series finale of Godfather of Harlem will follow Bumpy Johnson (Forest Whitaker) as he faces the ultimate reckoning with the walls closing in around his empire. With enemies converging from every direction—political, criminal, and personal—Bumpy must draw on every alliance, every sacrifice, and every hard lesson earned across five seasons to protect what he has built and the people he loves. The two-hour conclusion delivers the culmination of Bumpy’s extraordinary saga: a man who rose from the streets of Harlem to reshape the power structures of an entire era, and who now must decide what legacy he leaves behind.

Production on the finale is slated to kick off in July in New York. In addition to Whitaker, the series finale will see the return of Ilfenesh Hadera (She’s Gotta Have It), Antoinette Crowe-Legacy (WeCrashed), Erik LaRay Harvey (Luke Cage, Boardwalk Empire), and Rome Flynn (How to Get Away with Murder, Imperfect Women), among others.

Statements!

In a statement, Whitaker, who also executive produces the series, said, “Playing Bumpy Johnson has been one of the greatest experiences of my career. This character, this story, and this ensemble have allowed me to explore the complexity of a man caught between ambition, loyalty, and survival. I’m grateful to Michael Wright and MGM+, Chris Brancato, 20th Television, Amazon, the entire creative team, and our extraordinary cast, for five seasons of exceptional collaboration.“

Co-creator Chris Brancato added, “I’m grateful to MGM+, 20th Television, and our talented cast and crew for the opportunity to complete Bumpy Johnson’s extraordinary journey. Forest has filled the role with his signature blend of intelligence, ferocity, and gentility, bringing to life the boss who ruled Harlem’s streets for more than two decades.“

And finally, Michael Wright, global head of MGM+, said, “Forest Whitaker’s portrayal of Bumpy Johnson has been nothing short of extraordinary, and this series has been a defining jewel of MGM+’s original programming slate. We are deeply proud to give Godfather of Harlem the sendoff it deserves—a two-hour finale that honors the ambition, craft, and emotional power the creative team and cast have brought to this series from day one. This is exactly the kind of bold, character-driven storytelling that MGM+ was built to champion.“

At Least We’re Getting an Ending

I was late to Godfather of Harlem, only getting into the show just before the fourth season’s debut, but I loved it. Whitaker is fantastic as Bumpy, and I feel like this one really is an underrated crime drama. As disappointing as it might be that we’re not getting a full fifth season, I’m grateful that we’ll get an ending with this series finale.
