NBA: Billy Donovan steps down as Chicago Bulls coach <div id="content-body-70889800" itemprop="articleBody"><p>Billy Donovan stepped down as coach of the Chicago Bulls on Tuesday after the team missed the NBA playoffs for the fifth time in his six seasons in charge.</p><p>Donovan, who guided Florida to US college crowns in 2006 and 2007, went 226-256 with the Bulls after arriving in 2020, but had his worst season in Chicago in this past campaign, going 31-51.</p><p>“After a series of thoughtful and extensive discussions with ownership regarding the future of the organisation, I have decided to step away as the head coach of the Chicago Bulls, to allow the search process to unfold,” Donovan said in a statement released by the club.</p><p>“I believe it is in the best interest of the Bulls to allow the new leader to build out the staff as they see fit,” he added.</p><p>Donovan, 60, left Florida in 2015 to become coach of the Oklahoma City Thunder, which reached the playoffs in each of his five seasons there, losing in the Western Conference finals in 2016 and the first round in each of the next four seasons.</p><p>After going 243-157 with the Thunder, he departed in September 2020 after being unable to reach a deal on a contract extension. We wanted Billy to continue as our head coach — that was never in question. But through honest conversations, we all agreed that giving our new head of basketball operations the right to build out his staff was the most important thing for the future of this franchise. That’s the kind of person Billy is — he put the Bulls first. Billy Donovan decided not to stick around for the latest rebuild of the Chicago Bulls.

Donovan was 226-256 in six seasons with the Bulls, who added the coaching vacancy to the list of openings at the top of the organization. Chicago was in the midst of a search for a new president of basketball operations and general manager.

“After a series of thoughtful and extensive discussions with ownership regarding the future of the organization, I have decided to step away as the head coach of the Chicago Bulls to allow the search process to unfold,” Donovan said in a statement Tuesday. “I believe it is in the best interest of the Bulls to allow the new leader to build out the staff as they see fit.”

The Bulls said last week they wanted Donovan to return. With an option in his existing contract, Donovan decided not to exercise the clause for the 2026-27 season.

Donovan, 60, expressed no public interest in moving to a front-office role and there were no indications a move was proposed by the Bulls.

Abhishek Sharma scored a sensational unbeaten 135 off 68 balls against Delhi Capitals at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Tuesday.

Abhishek’s 135 is the fifth highest individual score in the history of the competition. The 25-year-old also set the record for the third highest score when he scored 141 runs off 55 balls against Punjab Kings in 2025.

This is also the second highest score by an Indian in the IPL, with the first highest being his own knock against PBKS.

Chris Gayle currently holds the record for the highest individual score when he scored 175* against Pune Warriors India in 2013.
