A shocking video out of Lexington, Kentucky, has gone viral after showing a Baptist pastor leading what looks like a military-style raid straight into a children’s Vacation Bible School, complete with a hooded “devil” figure getting gunned down by camo-clad “Commandos for Christ.”
The disturbing clip, posted on social and spreading fast across platforms, captures the chaotic scene at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church. Kids sit in pews as men in military gear storm the sanctuary, rifles in hand. A figure with a hood over his head lies on the steps to the altar, representing the devil. Pastor DeWayne Walker rallies the children to chant in unison: “Take him out, blow him up!”
Gunfire rings out as the squad pretends to blast the “devil” with what appear to be airsoft or prop guns. The figure is dragged out of a side door. An explosion sound effect follows, and the room erupts in cheers.
The dramatic skit is part of the church’s annual Vacation Bible School, which Walker says has featured good-versus-evil themes for over 30 years. In recent years, it’s included these “Commandos for Christ” characters using what he called the “gospel gun” to symbolically defeat evil.“
The clip you saw was simply killing the Devil,” Walker said in a Facebook video response to the backlash. “I’ll be honest with you, if I could kill the devil every day and raise him up and kill him again, I’d do it.”
He added that the performance was “nothing more than a small part of our vacation Bible school” and aimed to give kids a vivid picture of spiritual warfare. “You may not like how we did it… but understand that we’re painting a real picture for kids to visibly see what’s going on.”
The video has sparked outrage online and prompted calls to local police. Critics, including some parents and gun-violence prevention advocates, called the mock execution disturbing and inappropriate for young children, arguing it could traumatize kids or glorify violence.
Walker pushed back, saying he was “befuddled” by the reaction and blamed “misinformation” spreading online. Supporters have defended the church, calling its interactive VBS one of the best around and insisting the skit teaches kids to hate sin and reject evil.
The footage shows smiling and laughing kids in the background, with some appearing to treat it as exciting theater rather than real trauma. Still, the dramatic visuals, camo, guns, hooded figure, and chanting children have left many viewers stunned.
Walker stood by the tradition but acknowledged that not everyone would approve.
“Maybe you’re right, maybe we’re wrong,” he said, while emphasizing the church’s goal of making faith fun and memorable for the next generation.
