Massive Fire Destroys Million-Square-Foot Medical Supply Warehouse in California, Raising Supply Chain Concerns

TRACY, Calif. — A catastrophic blaze ripped through a massive Medline Industries medical supply distribution center in Tracy, California, on Thursday, completely destroying the 1 million-square-foot facility and sending thick plumes of black smoke billowing across the region.

Firefighters responded to the scene around 1 p.m. Thursday at the warehouse on Promontory Parkway in the Prologis International Park of Commerce. Upon arrival, crews found heavy flames already engulfing the roof of the sprawling building, which serves as a critical hub for distributing medical and surgical supplies to hospitals nationwide.

Tracy Fire Chief Randall Bradley said high winds, high temperatures, and low humidity fueled the rapid spread, turning the structure into a total loss within about 40 minutes. Firefighters attempted an interior attack but were forced to pull back as the blaze intensified.

Compounding the challenge, the facility’s sprinkler system failed to activate, and hydrants inside the building had no water pressure, severely hampering efforts to contain the fire. Crews had to rely on distant municipal water sources while battling embers that sparked spot fires nearby, including areas up to 2.5 miles away.

No serious injuries were reported. All Medline employees and on-site personnel were safely evacuated and accounted for, according to the company. One firefighter suffered minor back spasms. Nearby warehouses, including facilities operated by FedEx and Amazon, were also evacuated as a precaution. FedEx later confirmed its building was undamaged.

Medline Industries, the largest privately held manufacturer and distributor of medical supplies in the U.S., released a statement confirming the incident. “On June 11, a fire impacted Medline’s distribution facility in Tracy, California. All Medline employees and on-site personnel are accounted for. The safety and well-being of our employees is our top priority. We are coordinating closely with local authorities and first responders as we assess the fire’s impact,” the company said.

The facility was a major Northern California distribution point for hundreds of thousands of healthcare products. Medline supplies a wide range of hospitals and medical providers, raising immediate questions about potential short-term disruptions to medical supply chains amid already strained national logistics.

As of Friday, crews remained on scene battling lingering hot spots, with officials warning the effort could take days to fully extinguish. Air quality concerns were raised due to the large volume of burning plastics and other materials, though no protective warnings had been issued for residents at the time of reporting.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Authorities have not indicated any evidence of foul play at this time.

This incident comes as California continues to grapple with extreme weather conditions that have complicated firefighting efforts across the state. First responders from multiple agencies worked tirelessly through the night to protect surrounding properties and contain the damage.
