Michael B. Jordan has another blockbuster in the works besides “Miami Vice ’85,” and this one teams him up with Christopher McQuarrie instead of Joseph Kosinski.

THR reports that Jordan will star in a big-screen adaptation of the “Battlefield” military video game series, with McQuarrie set to write and direct. First launched in 2002, the long-running EA series is a military first-person shooter game similar to “Call Of Duty” (which also has a movie adaptation in the works, courtesy of Paramount, Taylor Sheridan, and Peter Berg) that pits the player in tense combat situations. No word yet, however, on if McQuarrie’s “Battlefield” will adapt a specific title from the series or be an original story altogether. “Battlefield 6,” the 18th and latest game from EA, launched last year and featured a near-future story centered around a splintered NATO. Time will tell what direction McQuarrie chooses for the film’s narrative.
And time will also tell which studio snatches up this project. McQuarrie is currently pitching to several of them, including Apple and Sony, but there’s no clear frontrunner at the moment. It’s also unclear if Netflix is in the mix, too. McQuarrie wants “Battlefield” to have a theatrical release (as well he should, in no small part to “Battlefield 6” being last year’s bestselling video game title), and the streaming giant likely won’t prioritize a long theatrical campaign.
In any case, expect the bidding war for “Battlefield” to get expensive once it begins. McQuarrie, thanks to his recent string of “Mission: Impossible” films, is a sought-after mega-budget director, and Jordan, fresh off an Oscar Best Actor win for “Sinners,” is one of Hollywood’s hottest actors at the moment. Add in the fact that video game adaptations are all the rage in Tinsel Town right now, and “Battlefield” may fetch a huge number for its budget.
Jordan adds “Battlefield” to a list of upcoming projects that includes the aforementioned “Miami Vice ’85,” his “The Thomas Crowne Affair” remake, and a voice role in the animated film “Swapped.” As for McQuarrie, this film is his first without frequent collaborator Tom Cruise since his 2000 directorial debut, “The Way Of The Gun.”
Stay tuned for more details on “Battlefield” as they arrive. As for a release date? Either next year or 2028.
