Roberto De Zerbi confirmed on Friday that Cristian Romero will miss the rest of Tottenham’s battle for Premier League survival, but remains optimistic that just one win can transform his side’s fortunes.
Romero suffered a knee injury, which could also endanger his place in Argentina’s World Cup squad, during last weekend’s 1-0 defeat by Sunderland in De Zerbi’s first match in charge.
“I am really sorry for him and his injury,” said De Zerbi.
“Romero first of all loves Tottenham and the people have to know he is suffering for this injury and because he cannot play any more for us this season,” he added.
Without a win in 14 league games, Spurs are two points adrift of safety with six matches of the campaign to go.
But victory against De Zerbi’s former club Brighton on Saturday would propel Tottenham out of the bottom three for at least 48 hours.
“I think it is crucial to win a game not just for the table. Of course, one part of the table for sure, but we have to feel again what it is nice to win a game and what it can do. I have no doubts about the quality of the players,” De Zerbi said.

In a bid to build team chemistry, De Zerbi took his players out to dinner this week in London’s Mayfair. The Italian is happy to pick up the bill for more dinners in the coming weeks if he is rewarded with results on the field.
“The food was amazing and if we win, I am ready to pay every week for one dinner,” said the former Marseille coach.
“I am positive, I am ready to fight, and I believe in keeping Premier League (status). I believe in the words that I said last week. The focus is to win one game,” he added.
Rodrigo Bentancur could make his return from a three-month injury layoff against the Seagulls. However, first-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario remains out after surgery on a hernia.

Judge Kim Bailey Phipps issued a default judgment of $2.88 million on Wednesday against Knox for the accident in which both men lost control of their vehicles in an accident that left several people injured.
The judgment awarded to Kathryn Kuykendall, one of the victims, includes punitive damages and costs for medical expenses and lost wages.
Rice, who is scheduled to go to trial in the matter on June 9, started the 2025 season by serving a six-game suspension for violating the league’s personal conduct policy stemming from his role in the crash on March 30, 2024.
He pleaded guilty in district court to two third-degree felony charges — collision involving serious bodily injury and racing on a highway causing bodily injury. Rice and four of his friends failed to check on the injured parties and fled on foot before police arrived.
Rice was sentenced to five years of deferred probation, and 30 days in jail. He also was required to pay more than $115,000 in restitution to the victims of the crash.
Rice, 25, was driving a rented Lamborghini SUV at speeds up to 119 mph at the time of the accident. Knox was driving a rented Corvette.
A second-round pick by Kansas City out of SMU in 2023, Rice has recorded 156 catches for 1,797 yards and 14 scores in 28 games (20 starts) over his first three NFL seasons.
In January, the court issued default judgments against Knox totaling more than $3.6 million for two other victims in the case. Knox played for two seasons with the Mustangs (2022-23) after one season at Mississippi State.

The Lions have prioritized revamping their offensive line this offseason, and adding a starting offensive tackle in the first round could be the final piece to their offseason puzzle. Coach Dan Campbell has stated that the team is open to moving All-Pro Penei Sewell to left tackle if the right RT presents himself, and Miller would certainly meet those qualifications.
While still just 22 years old, Miller has an impressive 54 starts at RT at Clemson and is arguably the most consistent and ready-to-play OT in this draft class. His combination of size (6-foot-7, 318 pounds), toughness, athleticism (9.90 RAS), football intelligence, and leadership form a very appealing prospect for the Lions, but it’s his gritty demeanor that makes him a perfect fit. Miller simply doesn’t take shortcuts in his work ethic, as he is unwilling to let his team down. This is most clearly evidenced by the fact that he missed just one practice during his entire four years at Clemson (due to having wrist surgery) and was back on the field the following day.
