‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Swings To Biggest Opening Day In Box Office History With 8 Million

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Swings To Biggest Opening Day In Box Office History With $168 Million

Sorry, “Avengers: Endgame,” your reign is over. “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is now the biggest opening day in box office history with $168 million. That surpasses the $157.4 million tally the Russo Brothers epic took in a little over seven years ago.

Most opening day grosses are technically inflated by previews being included in the total, and “Brand New Day” is no exception. The Sony Pictures release already broke the record for previews with $72 million. Those screenings started quite early at 12 PM, but only demonstrate the massive appeal of the Destin Daniel Cretton-directed blockbuster.

With an A-grade CinemaScore and positive reviews, as if a “Spider-Man” movie needed them, “Brand New Day” is already on track to beat the opening weekend for the last installment in the franchise, “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” The first true blockbuster after the pandemic, “No Way Home” debuted to $260 million in December 2021 on its way to an overall $1.91 billion gross. The question is whether Tom Holland‘s fourth go-around as the web-slinger can surpass “Endgame’s” all-time weekend records of $357.1 million domestic and $866 million global. Based on early international returns, the consensus is the worldwide record is more in danger than the stateside one.

Despite “Brand New Day’s” domination, Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” continued its spirited run with another $14.5 million for $359 million in the U.S. in just 15 days. The Universal Studios release has already taken in more than $720 million globally so far.

Also quizically choosing to throw themselves into the fray this weekend is Gregg Araki’s “I Want Your Sex.” The Sundance standout is hoping to seduce moviegoers in 702 theaters, technically nationwide, over the frame.

Full weekend box office estimates will be revealed on Sunday.
