LONDON — The Londoner, the luxury hotel by Leicester Square, is looking to stand out from the competitive Christmas tree game this year with romance and innovation created by fashion designer Susan Fang.
Instead of a traditional tree sourced from the woods, adorned with old-fashioned decorations, the hotel on Wednesday will unveil a futuristic tree-like installation made of layers of transparent bubbles, iridescent spheres, floating pink glass-like blooms, and delicate 3D-printed flowers, all signatures of Fang’s runway creations in recent years.
In an interview, the London- and Shanghai-based Chinese-Canadian designer said her goal was to create the dreamiest Christmas tree possible after being given the chance by the hotel’s owner, Edwardian Hotels London, to decorate the lobby area of The Londoner for the holiday season.
“I thought about how important this moment is for families, especially children, and all the dreams they project onto a tree. I wanted to create a surreal treat that brings a sense of hope,” explained the designer, who staged a futuristic spring 2026 show in the Barbican conservatory in September during London Fashion Week.
It took her quite some time to identify a style that hadn’t been done before in London.
“The core of our concept was to treat the tree like a piece of high jewelry. We heavily embellished it with our signature elements and played with tradition by using classic decorative balls, but in a prismatic, transparent material that mimics real blown bubbles. These are arranged on a white tree. We then incorporated our signature transparent flowers, which glow with pink Christmas lights to create a lively, fantastical atmosphere, like a tree straight out of a dream,” said Fang.

In addition to utilizing existing 3D-printed floral elements that have been widely used across previous collections, Fang designed two new, exclusive flower shapes that looked like snow melted flowers, and pink blossoming ones.
To her, Christmas is the most exciting and family-oriented time of the year.
“It’s a gift-filled, wishful season, full of excitement for the new year. I’ll be spending Christmas with my family in Belgium, and I’m thrilled that we’ve created this dreamy tree to bring joyful, memorable moments to so many families in London,” she said.
To celebrate the unveiling, the hotel will host a cocktail reception on Thursday with members of the creative community in London.
Previous fashion creatives who have designed Christmas trees for The Londoner include Kate Halfpenny, Huishan Zhang, Daniel Fletcher and Max Boyla.
Known for her deeply romantic yet refreshing take on femininity, Fang is a graduate from Central Saint Martins and was shortlisted for the 2019 edition of the LVMH Prize. She has presented collections in Shanghai, London, and Milan, a solo showcase supported by Dolce & Gabbana last year.
