Every year as May rolls around, fashion enthusiasts all over the world shift their attention to the Met Gala. The extravaganza takes over the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s famed stairs for one night, turning every viewer at home into a fashion critic.

However, though many tune in for the theatrics, the Met Gala is actually a yearly fundraiser for the museum’s Costume Institute, which each spring puts on a different spring exhibition that informs the night’s fashion shenanigans.

When is the Met Gala 2027 taking place?

The Met Gala traditionally takes place on the first Monday in May. As such, the Met Gala 2027 will take place on Monday, May 3. The Met Gala marks the opening of The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute spring fashion exhibition, which informs the evening’s dress code, and as such takes place a couple of days before the exhibition opens to the general public.

What is the Met Gala 2027 theme?

The Met Gala theme is often conflated with the main title of the spring exhibition at the Met’s Costume Institute. On July 31, 2026, Vogue announced that the title of the spring 2027 Costume Institute Exhibition is “John Galliano: Horizons.”

Vogue confirmed that “Horizons” will “examine and exalt” the oeuvre of the Gibraltar-born designer, from his student beginnings at the famed Central Saint Martins in London to his stints at Givenchy, Dior, and, more recently, Maison Margiela. The publication also confirmed this will mark only the third time a living designer is the center of the museum’s monographs, following Yves Saint Laurent in 1983 and Comme des Garçons’ Rei Kawakubo in 2017.

As confirmed by the Met, the exhibition will include garments, accessories, sketches, toiles, research books, and archival materials, most of which have been sourced from the Costume Institute’s own collection.

“Every Galliano collection begins as a journey among things separated by time, place, or medium: portrait and posture, silhouette and story, memory and material,” curator Andrew Bolton said. “Horizons approaches fashion as a form of cartography, mapping not territories but affinities, tensions, and transformations. It traces how images become ideas, ideas become material, and material becomes emotion. Yet a horizon reveals not only what lies before us, but also where we stand. The exhibition therefore considers both how Galliano has remapped the world through fashion and how his conduct, its consequences, and changing cultural values have reshaped our understanding of his work.”
