Tim Burton’s Newest Monster Doubles Down On Big Wednesday Season 1 Complaint

WARNING! This article contains SPOILERS for Wednesday season 2, part 2!A new Tim Burton monster has debuted on the small screen, with Wednesday season 2 introducing a creature design even more shocking than season 1’s divisive Hyde. Since the early days of his career, Tim Burton’s movies had a reputation for including some unconventional, unique, creepy character designs. From Large Marge’s frightening form to Betelegeuse’s many creepy bug-eyed iterations, Burton has an incredibly distinguished monster design.

Though many of his original monster designs were created with practical effects or claymation, Burton’s heavier move to CGI in the 2010s led to some more divisive responses to his films’ creatures. That was also the case for Wednesday season 1’s Hyde monster, which was criticized for its unsettling glossy CGI and overly-cartoonish appearance. Wednesday season 2’s characters now introduce yet another Hyde, which doesn’t help those previous complaints.

Francoise’s Hyde Looks Even More Disturbing & Weird Than Tyler’s In Season 1

When Francoise first revealed her Hyde form in Wednesday season 2, I can safely say that the shocking design of the monster made my mouth drop. Tyler’s Hyde monster already looked bizarre, but Francoise takes Wednesday’s Outcast species to the next level. Her Hyde’s eyes bulge even more, has longer stringy hair, and has a more distorted appearance than Tyler’s.

Hilariously, it’s almost as if Wednesday saw the complaints about Tyler’s Hyde from season 1 and, instead of pulling back on some of the more unsettling elements, completely doubled down on them. Ultimately, Wednesday is embracing the goofiness of the Hyde design with Francoise, even if it makes them more strange and disturbing rather than genuinely scary.

It’s also surprising that Wednesday season 2 made Francoise’s Hyde design so much more shocking after also fixing some complaints regarding the CGI appearance of Enid’s werewolf form. Though Wednesday season 2 reveals Enid is an Alpha werewolf, she only transforms on a select few occasions, so there’s less focus on her CGI form than Tyler and Francoise’s Hydes.

Still, Enid’s Alpha werewolf form in Wednesday season 2’s ending looks much less jarring, silly, and unrealistic than it did in season 1. Enid’s new werewolf look is a massive improvement from its previous iteration, whereas the Hydes have maintained and, I daresay, exacerbated the Wednesday Outcast creature’s divisiveness.

Francoise’s Hyde Is One Of Tim Burton’s Creepiest Monsters Ever

Of course, the Hyde’s strange design – and making it even more so in season 2 – falls directly in line with what one might expect of a Tim Burton-crafted monster. Still, Francoise’s unsettling Hyde goes the distance by now ranking high among Tim Burton’s creepiest monsters, arguably up there alongside Mars Attacks!’s Martians, the Hollows in Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, and The Nightmare Before Christmas’ Halloween Town residents.

Considering how many new Outcast species were introduced in season 2, it’s expected Wednesday season 3 will continue to expand its kooky world in future outings. When Wednesday returns to Nevermore, there’s no telling whether Burton will also return with a new creature design even creepier than the Hyde itself.
