Tom Cruise has already starred in one of the biggest blockbusters of the year in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, but now another of his most famous movies has made a surprising move on streaming. Cruise stars alongside Emily Blunt in Edge of Tomorrow, the 2014 sci-fi thriller following a man who gets stuck living the same day over and over again while fighting a war against aliens. Edge of Tomorrow had previously been streaming on Hulu in July, but after leaving the platform at the end of the month, it has since been scooped up by Peacock, where it is now streaming for all subscribers. Edge of Tomorrow grossed $381 million at the box office against a $178 million budget, and the film netted strong scores of 91% from critics and 90% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.
For Tom Cruise, Edge of Tomorrow came in the middle of a hot streak. He had just starred in Oblivion the year before, and two years before that, he starred in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. Cruise followed Edge of Tomorrow with Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, which are all regarded as some of his best movies. There are a few controversial Jack Reacher adaptations thrown in there, but now that Alan Ritchson has gracefully taken over the role on Prime Video, fans are more willing to look past Cruise’s unfaithful version. It’s been eight years since Cruise played an original role in American Made — everything since 2018 has either been Ethan Hunt from Mission: Impossible or Pete Mitchell from Top Gun. He may be done as Ethan Hunt, but he’ll play Pete Mitchell again in Top Gun 3.
What Do We Know about ‘Top Gun 3’?
Details about Top Gun 3 are being kept under wraps, but writer Christopher McQuarrie has confirmed that he and scribe Ehren Kruger have cracked the story for the film, and that Kruger is currently putting it into a workable script. Joseph Kosinski, who recently teamed up with Brad Pitt for F1, is expected to return as director for Top Gun 3, along with stars Miles Teller and Glen Powell. It’s unclear when Top Gun 3 will begin production or be released, but it will likely be a while, as Cruise is due to begin shooting his next movie with Ana de Armas soon.
Edge of Tomorrow is now streaming on Peacock. Stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates and coverage of Cruise’s future projects.
