Tom Holland’s Spider-Man Is Officially 10 Years Old Today

Tom Holland has become the modern iteration of Spider-Man for audiences around the world, and as surprising as it may be to realize, he’s already been around for 10 years. Marvel’s iconic superhero has a rich cinematic history, one that Holland became part of when he nabbed the role of Peter Parker in Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios’ first-ever collaboration for the character.

Tobey Maguire left big shoes to fill with his version of Spider-Man from Sam Raimi’s 2000s trilogy, with Andrew Garfield only receiving two The Amazing Spider-Man movies before Sony pulled the plug. The decision was then made to sign a historic deal with Marvel Studios to share Spider-Man, rebooting him as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with new solo films and the opportunity to be in crossover events.

This led to a widespread casting search to find the lucky actor who would land one of Hollywood’s most coveted roles and completely change their careers. Holland emerged as Sony and Marvel’s choice for the part after screen testing with Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, beating out other finalists Asa Butterfield, Charlie Plummer, Charlie Rowe, Judah Lewis, and Matthew Lintz. He signed a six-picture contract consisting of three solo films and three MCU event movies and was formally announced as the MCU’s Spider-Man actor on June 23, 2015.

Less than a year later, audiences around the world got to meet Holland’s Spider-Man as he made his MCU debut in Captain America: Civil War. The movie, which came out on May 6, 2016, has officially turned 10 years old, marking a massive anniversary for the web-slinger and the $30 billion franchise he’s now part of.

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man Is The Version Fans Waited Years To See

The debut of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in the MCU was a huge success. Captain America: Civil War used him sparingly as a final recruit to Team Iron Man, with him only on screen for about nine minutes or roughly six percent of the 2-hour and 27-minute blockbuster. Even with that limited role, Holland, the Russo brothers, screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, and Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige proved they had a strong grasp on the character.

This was the version of the friendly neighborhood hero that comic readers had yearned for years to see on the big screen. Maguire’s version is undoubtedly iconic, and Garfield’s take has drawn more appreciation over time, but Holland’s iteration breathed new life into a familiar character by fixing prior issues from the jump.

For starters, Holland’s Spider-Man is actually a teenager in Civil War. He’s portrayed as a 15-year-old in his MCU debut, with the actor only 19 years old when he filmed his scenes. That’s a stark difference from previous incarnations. Maguire and Garfield were 26 and 27 years old, respectively, when they made their first appearances, even though both were meant to pass as 17-year-olds. Holland’s youthfulness is fully present and easily believable, making him feel like the young hero people know from the comics.

Are you an Avenger — or just a friendly neighborhood bystander?

Even the personality and performance Holland brings immediately make him feel like the definitive version of the wall-crawler. He handles Spider-Man’s typical quips with ease, but he can also work as the lonely nerd who lacks confidence but has a strong moral compass. While Maguire is a better Peter Parker than Spider-Man and Garfield is a better Spider-Man than Peter Parker, Holland is the one who melds the two halves of the character together the best.

What really makes Holland’s Spider-Man the version fans dreamed about is his placement in the MCU. Not that being in this shared universe alone makes him superior to the former versions, but there was previously a strong desire to see Spidey mix it up with the Avengers and other Marvel heroes, like Daredevil, on the big screen. That never seemed possible due to the character’s rights. Civil War finally giving Spider-Man interactions with Iron Man, Captain America, and others was a dream come true.

The response to the MCU’s Spider-Man was electric as a result. While criticisms of the characterization have emerged over the last 10 years, Holland’s portrayal is still held in high regard. Civil War laid the groundwork for this new take and set him up to have incredible success from that point on.

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man Has Become One Of The MCU’s Biggest Characters Over The Last 10 Years

Given the incredible popularity that Spider-Man has had as a character for decades, perhaps it should not come as a surprise that he’s emerged as a pivotal focal point of the MCU. But that is remarkable considering he’s not a fully-owned Marvel Studios property, with Sony and Marvel’s individual and collective interests ensuring that audiences have gotten a lot of Holland’s hero in a decade.

Holland has played Spider-Man in six MCU movies. He completed an individual trilogy — Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), and Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) — faster than any other Spider-Man or fellow MCU hero. These appearances were aided by roles in Captain America: Civil War (2016), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and Avengers: Endgame (2019). Holland also had an uncredited cameo in Venom: Let There Be Carnage.

The MCU has seen the benefit of including Spider-Man in its movies. He’s responsible for the MCU’s highest-grossing solo movie, No Way Home ($1.9 billion). Spider-Man is one of three characters to be in the MCU’s three biggest movies overall. All but one of his films have made over $1 billion (Homecoming). Overall, the MCU has made $9.9 billion off movies with Spider-Man, with an average gross of $1.6 billion.

Beyond the financial impact of Spider-Man on the MCU’s box office and merchandise, he’s also been given a defining role in the shared universe. His relationship with Tony Stark was key throughout Phase 3. Spider-Man became an official Avenger, helped fight Thanos, and is tied to the multiverse breaking open.

If Holland’s Spider-Man was never part of the MCU, the last 10 years would look entirely different. Narrative arcs would have significantly changed. Major emotional beats would be lost. Exciting crossovers never would have happened. Marvel would be without its biggest post-Endgame hit, too. It’s impossible to forget about his role, even if those in the MCU have had their memories of Peter Parker wiped away.

Will Tom Holland Play Spider-Man For Another 10 Years?

Thankfully, the good times with Holland’s Spider-Man are bound to continue. Sony and Marvel have made a fourth solo film for him, with Spider-Man: Brand New Day scheduled to hit theaters on July 31, 2026. The street-level blockbuster ensures a seventh MCU appearance for Spider-Man, and it’s unlikely to be his last.

There is a chance he’ll have a small role in Avengers: Doomsday at the end of 2026. The odds are greater that Holland’s Spider-Man is in Avengers: Secret Wars, which will extend his time in the MCU to over 11 years. Depending on what happens to him by the end of the Multiverse Saga, Holland completing a second trilogy of solo films will be quite possible.

There are currently no confirmed plans for Spider-Man 5 or Spider-Man 6, but Holland has remained consistent that he’d love to keep playing Spider-Man for many more movies. He’s a lifelong fan of Spider-Man and has become a great ambassador for the character over the last decade. So long as his passion to play him remains, there are plenty of opportunities for more stories as Peter enters adulthood.

Whether this will extend until 2036 is more unclear. Holland will turn 40 that year, making him younger than Maguire in No Way Home, so he certainly will not be too old to keep playing the character. The question will more so be whether he and the MCU decide before then that it’s time for a change.

Holland has long expressed his interest in helping bring Miles Morales to live-action and passing the Spider-Man mantle to him, with Peter serving as a mentor. This could happen much sooner than some may expect (considering Holland is only on the verge of turning 30), such as in Spider-Man 5. Depending on how they want that to go creatively, Peter Parker’s MCU story could end before another decade passes.

Then again, the endless possibilities for new Spider-Man stories could also keep Holland around for twenty years if he really wanted to, so long as the MCU remains successful that long. Whether Holland’s version of the character is with us for another two years or two decades, it’s amazing that we’ve gotten a full 10 years of excellent appearances already after Captain America: Civil War.
