Thirty-three years ago, one of the greatest sci-fi series ever made premiered to widespread acclaim, which remained fairly consistent throughout its 11-season run. Created by Emmy nominee Chris Carter, the masterpiece aired on Fox from September 10, 1993, to May 19, 2002, spanning 9 seasons and 202 episodes, before being revived for 2 additional seasons from January 24, 2016, to March 21, 2018. In the years since the series finale, sci-fi devotees have never grown tired of watching and rewatching the hit show, which is being rebooted once more and remains a major influence on pop culture.
Highlighting unsolved cases involving paranormal phenomena, The X-Files is one show every sci-fi fan must watch. It spawned a franchise that includes spin-offs Millennium and The Lone Gunmen as well as two feature films, the 1998 film The X-Files and the stand-alone film The X-Files: I Want to Believe, released in 2008, six years after the original TV run ended. By the time the show ended, it was the longest-running sci-fi series in American television history.
As fans already know, The X-Files is getting an exciting reboot from Ryan Coogler, which is already in development. Amid eager anticipation, many are flocking to the phenomenal series, prompting it to surge on U.S. VOD charts. The X-Files is among the most sought-after titles on the Apple TV store stateside. Starring in the series are David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson as FBI Special Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, respectively, who investigate the titular supernatural X-Files.
What Do We Know About Ryan Coogler’s ‘X-Files’ Reboot?
Early last year, Coogler confirmed that the X-Files reboot would be his next project after his Oscar-winning film, Sinners, and he began work on it by October. Later in February 2026, Hulu ordered a pilot for the reboot, which has no premiere date as of this writing. Starring in the upcoming series are Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel as FBI agents, who “form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena.” Jennifer Yale will serve as showrunner, and Chris Carter will serve as an executive producer. Announced guest stars include Amy Madigan, Steve Buscemi, Ben Foster, Devery Jacobs, Lochlyn Munro, Tantoo Cardinal, and Joel Montgrand.
