WASHINGTON, D.C. – A 21-year-old man with a history of trying to infiltrate the White House and serious mental health issues was shot and killed by Secret Service agents Saturday evening after he opened fire near a security checkpoint outside the executive mansion, officials said.

The suspect was identified as Nasire Best, of Maryland. According to multiple law enforcement sources, Best approached a checkpoint in the area of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue around 6 p.m. ET, pulled a revolver from his bag, and began firing at officers. Secret Service personnel returned fire, striking Best. He was transported to George Washington University Hospital, where he later died.

No Secret Service officers were injured in the exchange. President Donald Trump, who was inside the White House at the time, remained safe and unharmed as the brief lockdown was lifted. One innocent bystander was wounded and hospitalized in serious condition.

Best was no stranger to the Secret Service. Sources say he had multiple prior run-ins, including attempts to gain entry to the White House grounds in 2025. In one incident, he was arrested after trying to access restricted areas and was sent to a psychiatric facility for evaluation. He had reportedly been issued a stay-away order.

Reports indicate Best suffered from severe mental health problems, including delusions in which he believed he was Jesus Christ or “God.” He had been living in the Washington, D.C. area for about 18 months.

The incident comes amid heightened security concerns around the White House and follows other recent threats against President Trump. Secret Service agents acted swiftly to neutralize the threat, preventing what could have been a far more serious attack on the grounds of the people’s house.
