Widow’s Bay renewed for season 2 at Apple TV

Mayor Tom Loftis will have his work cut out for him as Widow’s Bay has been renewed for season 2 at Apple TV. The news comes just before the first season concludes, with the finale scheduled for June 17.

Widow’s Bay Season 2

From the moment audiences arrived in Widow’s Bay, they’ve been hooked on every eerie mystery, unexpected laughs, and cursed secret that Katie, Hiro, Matthew, and the entire team have created,” said Matt Cherniss, head of programming at Apple TV. “It’s become one of those shows everyone’s talking about, and we’re thrilled to see audiences continue to embrace it. We can’t wait to return for another season.

Series creator Katie Dippold, who also serves as showrunner and executive producer, joked that the second season will be “about how everything is great on the island and there’s nothing to worry about.

Apple TV has signed Dippold to a multi-year overall deal. She’ll continue to serve as showrunner of Widow’s Bay while also developing new projects.

The official logline reads: “Mayor Tom Loftis (Rhys) is desperate to revive his struggling community. There’s no wifi, spotty cellular reception, and he must contend with superstitious locals who believe their island is cursed. He wants these people to respect him. They don’t. They think he is soft and cowardly. And he is. But Loftis is determined to build a better future for his teenage son and turn the island into a tourist destination.  Miraculously, he succeeds: tourists are finally coming. Unfortunately, the locals were right. After decades of calm, the old stories that seemed too ludicrous to be true start happening again.

I haven’t gotten around to checking out the series for myself, but I’m certainly seeing plenty of love for it on social media. Even Guillermo del Toro said the show “may very well be the best streaming series in a long time.

What We Thought

In his review, our own Alex Maidy said, “Widow’s Bay is scary enough to creep out those who can’t stomach horror, but it’s also a good way to get into the genre without being truly terrified. There are some genuinely scary moments in the series that will likely have you keep your lights on after watching, but you will be invested in the story, the mystery, and the great cast of characters. Matthew Rhys makes for a fantastic lead in every project that he appears in, but Widow’s Bay has given me a new view of his talents as an actor with his balance of funny and frightening.” You can check out the rest of his review right here.
