Your Hanukkah Shopping List (but Make It Luxury!)
Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Lights, is fast approaching (there’s less than two weeks left before it arrives on the scene, in fact), but before you can tell all your loved ones “chag sameach!” it’s important to ensure your environs are sufficiently dolled up for the occasion — especially if you plan on hosting guests this time of year.
Whether you’re a practicing Jew, a secular one who observes religious rituals from time to time, or are simply excited to play hostess for your Jewish friend group, one thing can be agreed upon: Thoughtful tablescaping and home decor are of utmost importance as the holy days commence, since so many Jewish traditions happen around the dinner table.
While the online marketplace is replete with Christmas-ready centerpieces, dinnerware, mantel adornments, and wreaths fit for the December celebrations, it can be tougher to find the Jewish equivalents of all these themed goods — especially if you’re looking for something less “under-$30 Mensch on a Bench plushie” and more “luxury mezuzah from a beloved designer to impress your dodah.” Fortunately, our shopping editors have taken the time to scour the e-shelves for you, honing in on key pieces to shop ahead of the Jewish holidays: no matter if you choose to use some as gifts or keep them for your own household.
On TikTok, you’ll find ample inspiration for effectively styling your fresh Hanukkah purchases. A quick search offers up aspirational videos of minimalist menorahs layered in with flocked garlands over a fireplace; blue-and-white tablecloths topped with tapered candles and hand-blown, blue-hued glassware; Hanukkah-coded bar arrangements; and beyond.
As with any interior design endeavor, we recommend anchoring your holiday table arrangement with one or two focal points; going for a coordinated color palette (blue and white is the most common and on-brand) that won’t overwhelm the eyes; and leaving ample space for your guests to move around, gesticulating passionately with their hands as they alternate between sipping on mulled cocktails and biting into their sufganiyot.
Then, of course, there’s always the possibility of going overboard with your decorations, which doesn’t serve anyone well.
”As a maximalist, balance is something that I struggle with,” says Rivki Berkovits Rabinowitz, a Jewish podcast host and full-time content creator with a background in interior design. “If you want to serve ‘family style,’ you have two options: Keep your tablescape more simple, or, once the dinner starts, remove some of the arrangements.”
