The Toronto Maple Leafs of the Canadian Baseball League signed former Major League Baseball All-Star Yasiel Puig for the 2026 season.
How long his tenure with the team will last is up to Judge Dolly M. Gee in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California in Los Angeles. Puig is scheduled to be sentenced May 26 following his February conviction on one count each of obstruction of justice and making false statements to federal officials in connection with an investigation into illegal sports gambling.
Law enforcement was looking into a Southern California illegal bookmaking operation with which Puig placed hundreds of bets. The U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Central District of California said Puig lost nearly $1 million, which he never paid, for unsuccessful bets on football, basketball and tennis.
The 35-year-old Puig faces up to 15 years in prison, though the sentence could be much lighter.
Puig’s issues did not stop the Maple Leafs from signing what the Toronto Star said was the largest contract in league history, though numbers were not divulged.
Maple Leafs CEO Keith Stein told the newspaper that Puig is an A-plus addition.
“We think he’s the most exciting player in men’s baseball who’s not playing in MLB right now,” Stein said. “And we think he’s better than a lot of guys who are in MLB, so we can’t believe our good fortune.”
Puig became an overnight sensation when, as a charismatic rookie outfielder with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2013, he hit .319 with 19 home runs and 42 RBIs in 104 games after his June 3 promotion from the minor leagues. Despite missing the first two months of the season, he finished second in National League Rookie of the Year voting to the late Jose Fernandez, a pitcher for the Miami Marlins.
Puig was an All-Star in 2014, but by 2018, the Dodgers were ready to part with him after tiring of his on-field antics and off-field trouble. He was traded to the Cincinnati Reds in 2019, and that team quickly flipped him to Cleveland, with pitcher Trevor Bauer changing cities as part of the trade.
In 2020, Puig was ready to sign as a free agent with the Atlanta Braves, but the deal was off when he tested positive for COVID-19. Since then, he has played in a variety of countries, including Korea, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic and Mexico.
In the major leagues, the Cuban defector hit .277 with 132 home runs, 415 RBIs and 79 stolen bases.
Puig is expected to be in the lineup for the Maple Leafs when they open the season on May 10.

There has been no racing in April because the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix were called off due to the West Asia tensions. That means Miami will be the fourth race of the season rather than the sixth.
“Across Miami and Canada we will see an entirely new MCL40 (car)… this is what I would expect of most of our competitors so it’s not necessarily going to be a shift in the pecking order, it will be effectively just a check who has been able to add more performance within the same timeframe,” said Stella.
The team is third in the standings, 89 points behind Mercedes which finished the first two races one-two.
McLaren, constructors’ champion for the past two years and winner of the drivers’ title last year with Lando Norris, is more limited than others on wind tunnel use and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) because each team’s allocation is linked to where it finishes each season.
However chief designer Rob Marshall told reporters that was not the big disadvantage it appeared to be.
“The truth of it is you have many potential developments that you want to run through CFD or the wind tunnel and some are good and some are bad,” he said.
“So if you’re bright and you approach it the right way and you think about stuff methodically… you just don’t bother doing the stuff that wasn’t worth doing and you carry on doing the stuff at the top of the list.
“So in a way you free up resources, because if you’ve got a lot of wind tunnel resources and CFD time, you end up doing a lot of stuff that’s nice to have — but actually we’re not in the business of nice to have. We’re in the business of the stuff that actually works and so that’s the stuff you do.”

Champion McLaren will have “a completely new car” when Formula One returns from a five-week break at the Miami Grand Prix in May, according to team principal Andrea Stella.
Mercedes, which provides McLaren’s engines, has won all three races so far this season but the last race in Japan was closer between the two teams.
Australian Oscar Piastri ended up second to Mercedes’ Italian Kimi Antonelli at Suzuka and might have won but for a safety car period helping his rival.
“There was always the idea to deliver a completely new car, especially from an aerodynamic upgrades point of view, for the North American races,” Stella told reporters at the team’s factory.
“We could keep up with this plan. Obviously, the fact that the calendar has been changed sort of helped a little bit, like I’m sure (it) helped all the other teams that could work more streamlined towards upgrading the car rather than being busy with racing.”

Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal has been ruled out for the final six matches of the La Liga season due a torn left hamstring, however he is expected to be ready to compete for Spain in the World Cup, his club announced Thursday.
Yamal sustained the injury during Barcelona’s 1-0 victory over Celta Vigo on Wednesday.
The 18-year-old superstar drew a foul that led to a penalty kick, which Yamal stepped up and scored in the 40th minute. However, once the ball hit the net, Yamal didn’t celebrate. Instead he went down injured. He clutched at his left hamstring instead.
Yamal will undergo a “conservative treatment plan” and will avoid surgery, Barcelona announced.
In a message posted Thursday for his 41.6 million Instagram followers, Yamal said this, translated from Spanish by Instagram:
“This injury leaves me off the field at the time I most wanted to be, and it hurts more than I can explain. It hurts not being able to fight with my teammates, not being able to help when the team needs me. But I believe in them and I know they’re going to drop their souls in every game,” he wrote about his La Liga team.
“I’ll be there, even if it’s from the outside, supporting, encouraging and pushing as one more. This is not the end, this is just a break. I’ll come back stronger, more eager than ever, and next season will be better.”
The goal was Yamal’s 16th in 28 La Liga matches this season (his 24th in 45 games in all competitions), and it led Barcelona to a 1-0 win. The result leaves Barcelona with a nine-point lead on second-place Real Madrid in the league standings.
Spain is scheduled for Group H matches on June 15 against Cape Verde and on June 21 versus Saudi Arabia, both in Atlanta, then against Uruguay on June 26 in Zapopan, Mexico.
Spain won UEFA Euro 2024 in part due to contributions from a then-16-year-old Yamal. A sublime playmaker and finisher, Yamal has six goals in 25 career appearances for the Spanish national team.

Sanju Samson laid the foundation by bettering his T20 World Cup semifinal heroics at the Wankhede Stadium with his second hundred of IPL 2026. And Akeal Hosein’s sensational spell sealed the deal as the marquee clash between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) turned into a cakewalk for the visitor on Thursday.
Samson’s fifth IPL hundred, coupled with Akeal producing arguably the spell of the season, left MI on the mat as CSK registered a thumping 103-run win. After posting 207 for six, CSK bundled MI out for 104 in 19 overs with little fuss, the chase never quite taking off.
Impact Player Akeal, drafted in for his new-ball utility, struck immediately. His first over saw MI’s Impact Player Danish Malewar edge one behind the stumps. Soon after, Quinton de Kock played on off Mukesh Choudhary — the pacer gesturing to the heavens in tribute to his mother, who passed away earlier in the week. In his next over, Akeal spun one in from leg stump to castle Naman Dhir. At 11 for three, MI was already on the ropes.
The Wankhede, packed and loud, found itself outnumbered and outvoiced by a sea of yellow. The onus fell on Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma but Akeal returned to break that resistance, sneaking one through Tilak’s defence. Alongside Noor Ahmad, he triggered a collapse — four wickets for three runs off nine balls — as MI slipped from 84 for three to 87 for seven. Shardul Thakur, on as a concussion substitute for Mitchell Santner, merely delayed the inevitable.
Earlier, Samson had ensured that CSK had a big total to defend. Ruturaj Gaikwad started briskly before falling to Allah Ghazanfar while Shivam Dube struggled for timing. The rest of the top-order maintained strike rates above 150.
Samson, watchful early, opened up with precision later. On 85 at the start of the final over, he muscled one over deep midwicket off Krish Bhagat, then, after two dots, carved a wide ball over covers. Farming strike, he finished with a pull over square leg for a one-bounce four — a flourish that helped him celebrate the milestone in style and push MI on the back foot.

Atlanta Falcons linebacker James Pearce Jr. will have all charges dismissed if he completes an intervention program that includes therapy sessions and staying out of trouble for six months.
Attorney Yale Sanford told ESPN on Thursday that his client also agreed to stay away from ex-girlfriend Rickea Jackson of the WNBA’s Chicago Sky.
Pearce, 22, still is facing a potential league suspension after being arrested on Feb. 7 in Doral, Fla., on multiple criminal charges including felony counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, fleeing police and resisting arrest and a misdemeanor stalking charge.
Pearce allegedly crashed his vehicle into a car driven by Jackson, his ex-girlfriend. Jackson also has accused Pearce of abuse on multiple other occasions and was granted a temporary protective order following his arrest.
A trial date had been set for May 4. Pearce is scheduled to appear in Miami-Dade County Court on May 7 to finalize the details of the resolution.
The Falcons declined to issue a comment to ESPN on Thursday.
Pearce was selected by the Falcons in the first round (26th overall) of the 2025 draft. He finished third in Defensive Rookie of the Year voting after recording 10.5 sacks, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, five passes defensed and 26 tackles in 17 games (three starts).
