Martin Perez pitched five scoreless innings and Ozzie Albies homered to help the Atlanta Braves defeat the visiting Detroit Tigers 5-2 on Tuesday in the opener of a three-series between division-leading clubs.
The journeyman left-hander (2-1) allowed two hits and four walks, striking out five. It was his first win over the Tigers since Aug. 25, 2019.
Atlanta’s nine-hit attack was led by Mike Yastrzemski, who went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Yastrzemski had been struggling, going 2-for-20 with six strikeouts of the previous six games.
Albies added a two-run homer, his sixth, in the eighth inning off reliever Tyler Holton to provide some insurance.
Didier Fuentes, recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett on Tuesday when Dylan Lee went on the paternity list, followed Perez with two scoreless innings. Tyler Kinley allowed two hits but struck out two in a scoreless eighth inning. Aaron Bummer allowed a two-run homer to Wenceel Perez in the ninth.
Detroit’s Kevin McGonigle reached on an infield single in the eighth to extend his hitting streak to 12 games, but Spencer Torkelson went 0-for-3, ending his franchise-tying streak of five consecutive games with a home run.
Atlanta scored twice in the third when Yastrzemski and Ronald Acuna Jr. hit back-to-back doubles. Acuna went to third base on Drake Baldwin’s infield out and scored on Matt Olson’s sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead.
Detroit starter Casey Mize had to leave the game with right groin tightness after the Baldwin grounder. Mize fielded the ball and made an underhand toss to get the out, but grimaced as his momentum carried him into foul territory. Detroit manager A.J. Hinch and the team trainer examined Mize, who was immediately removed from the game.
Mize (2-2) worked 2 1/3 innings and allowed two runs on three hits and one walk, with three strikeouts.
The Braves upped their lead to 3-0 with a run in the seventh inning against reliever Burch Smith. Mauricio Dubon doubled and scored when Yastzemski lined a single that just got over the glove of leaping second baseman Gleyber Torres.

Jan 17, 2026; Denver, CO, USA; Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix (10) celebrates after winning an AFC Divisional Round playoff game against the Buffalo Bills at Empower Field at Mile High. Mandatory Credit: Ron Chenoy-Imagn Images Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix recently underwent a successful pre-planned cleanup procedure on his injured right ankle, NFL Network reported on Tuesday.
The 26-year-old sustained a season-ending fractured right ankle moments while leading Denver to a win over the Buffalo Bills in an AFC divisional playoff game. Nix underwent surgery two days later in Alabama.
Nix, heading into his third pro season, is expected to be slowed into action throughout Denver’s voluntary offseason programs and OTAs shortly after, per the report. The Broncos plan take it “very easy” with the quarterback, according to NFL Network.
“He had a recheck that was scheduled,” Denver coach Sean Payton said Saturday. “He’s doing great. We’re excited about his progress. These guys will be coming in here. … He’s here.”

Chelsea defender Millie Bright called time on her illustrious playing career on Wednesday after 17 years during which she won 20 trophies with the Women’s Super League club.
The former England defender, who became Chelsea’s longest-serving player and made 314 appearances for the club, will take on roles as club ambassador and trustee of the Chelsea Foundation.
“Representing Chelsea over the last 12 years has been everything to me, but I’m now ready to say goodbye to playing football,” Bright said in a statement.
“I’ve given all I can and I never wanted to fight for any other badge. It is now time and I’m ready to go into a new era. I’m always going to be Chelsea, but just in a different way.”
Bright’s retirement caps a remarkable journey that began when she signed from Doncaster Belles in 2015.
She went on to set the record for most WSL appearances with 216, surpassing Jordan Nobbs’ previous mark of 210 in November.
The 32-year-old was also in the squad when Chelsea won its first trophy in 2015 and every one of the 19 that followed, including all eight WSL titles the club has claimed.
Her medal collection also features six Women’s FA Cup triumphs and four Women’s League Cups, contributing to two domestic trebles in 2021 and 2025.
After being named club captain in 2023, Bright led from the front during Chelsea’s unbeaten domestic campaign in 2024-25, clocking up more than 3,000 minutes while wearing the armband.
In international football, Bright earned 88 caps and scored six goals for England after making her debut in 2016.
A cornerstone of England’s Euro 2022 triumph on home soil, she later captained England to the World Cup final in 2023, when it finished runner-up to Spain.
Her services to football were recognised with an OBE in the King’s New Year’s Honours List of 2024.
“We will be marking Millie’s loyal service ahead of our final Women’s Super League match of the season against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on May 16,” Chelsea said.
