Indian long jumper Murali Sreeshankar won the Simbine Classic in Pretoria on Tuesday with a best effort of 8.12 metres.
The event in South Africa is a World Athletics Continental Tour silver level meet. Divan Manuel of the host nation was the only other jumper to clear the 8-metre mark.
This was only the second competition for the Kerala athlete this season. He had picked a gold at the Indian Athletics Series in Bengaluru earlier this month with a best of 8.15m.
Tuesday’s outing was another step Sreeshankar took towards attaining his best. The 27-year-old had missed the 2024 Olympics due to a knee injury. He had qualified for the Athletics World Championships in Tokyo but could not make the finals after a best of 7.78m in the qualifying round.

The Indian men’s team made a strong start to its campaign at the World Team Table Tennis Championships with a convincing 3-0 win over Tunisia, while the women’s side was awarded a walkover on Tuesday.
Manush Shah, Manav Thakkar and Harmeet Desai registered impressive wins for India.
Manush got the team off to a steady start, defeating Essid Wassim 3-1 (11-5, 9-11, 11-3, 11-5) before Thakkar and Desai picked up identical 3-0 wins.
World No. 38 Thakkar extended the lead, overwhelming Yousef Aidli 11-3, 11-3, 11-3 in a one-sided contest. Desai wrapped up the tie with a composed display, beating Aboubaker Bourass 11-5, 11-4, 11-8 to seal a comprehensive win for the Indian side.
Placed in Group 7 of Stage 1B, the result has propelled the Indian men’s team to the top of the standings in a group that also features Slovakia and Guatemala.
Earlier in the day, the Indian women’s team received a 3-0 walkover after Uganda failed to report for the tie.
Like the men, the women’s side is also competing in Stage 1B of the tournament.
The top two seeded groups, featuring the top seven teams plus hosts England, start in Stage 1A, while the remaining teams play in Stage 1B.
Only group winners are guaranteed direct entry into the main draw from Stage 1B, while second-placed teams face a complicated qualification route based on match ratios.
Meanwhile, the Sports Authority of India (SAI) has extended significant support ahead of the Championships, sanctioning over Rs. 90 lakh for preparations and participation.
This included a national coaching camp in Bengaluru followed by an overseas training stint in Sheffield.
SAI also released a total fund of approximately Rs. 60.1 lakh to the Table Tennis Federation of India to ensure the teams’ participation.

Caitlin Clark is releasing a children’s book based on her life story titled “EXTRAordinary! A Little EXTRA to Reach BIG Dreams!”
Clark’s chosen title is a nod to the phrase decorating a wall in her childhood bedroom that read: “The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is the little EXTRA.”
The 32-page rhyming picture book is set to be released on Nov. 3 in time for holiday giving. With a list price of $19.99, the book is available for pre-order from retailers that include Barnes & Noble, Amazon and Target. It also will be sold as an audiobook by publisher Penguin/Random House.
Suggested ages for the book are 4 to 8.
A third-year guard for the Indiana Fever, Clark rose to prominence during a prolific college career at Iowa, chasing down the all-time scoring record in Division I college basketball and leading the Hawkeyes to the Final Four twice. She was the No. 1 overall pick in the WNBA draft in 2024 and has multiple high-paying endorsement deals. As part of her contract with Nike worth $28 million, Clark has a signature shoe and apparel line.
Clark said the book is also a reminder to cherish the ones you love and not to forget to include yourself in that group.
The book reads: “I look in the mirror, and what do I see? A special reminder to be the best me.”
Adriana Predoi illustrated the book. The London-based artist grew up in Romania.

फिलहाल, इस मुद्दे ने चुनावी माहौल को और गरमा दिया है और प्रशासन तथा राजनीतिक दलों के बीच टकराव की स्थिति पैदा कर दी है। 2011 बैच के आईपीएस अधिकारी शर्मा, जो अपराधियों के खिलाफ सख्त कार्रवाई के चलते ‘सिंघम’ के नाम से जाने जाते हैं, पिछले दो दिनों से दक्षिण 24 परगना जिले की फाल्टा विधानसभा क्षेत्र में लगातार तलाशी अभियान चला रहे थे। यह इलाका अभिषेक बनर्जी के प्रभाव वाले डायमंड हार्बर लोकसभा क्षेत्र के अंतर्गत आता है। बताया जा रहा है कि उनके साथ सशस्त्र केंद्रीय अर्धसैनिक बलों के 100 से अधिक जवान और एक बख्तरबंद वाहन भी मौजूद था। उनके पास कथित 'उपद्रवियों' की एक सूची भी थी, जिनकी निगरानी की जा रही थी।
इस कार्रवाई के दौरान तृणमूल कांग्रेस समर्थकों ने विरोध प्रदर्शन किया। स्थानीय टीएमसी उम्मीदवार जहांगीर खान के घर और चुनाव कार्यालय के बाहर कार्यकर्ताओं ने ‘जय बांग्ला’ के नारे लगाए और पुलिस की कार्रवाई पर नाराजगी जताई। Edited by : Sudhir Sharma
