Formula 1 is finally back after an extended absence, with this weekend’s Miami Grand Prix.
But it is shaping up to be a rather soggy return to the track.
Weather was the dominant story during Thursday’s media day sessions, as current forecasts call for thunderstorms and heavy rain on Sunday during the main event. That forecast has all the drivers talking about what they might encounter, and even has the sport considering changing the schedule for the weekend.
“It’ll be interesting. I don’t think many of us have driven these cars in the rain before, maybe a couple of people in Barcelona at the shakedown,“ said Oscar Piastri during Thursday’s FIA Press Conference. ”But I think they’re going to be challenging cars to drive in the rain just because of some of the quirks that they have. And obviously the weather, normally if it rains in Miami, it does it properly, so we’ll wait and see. But it’ll be interesting one way or another.“
“I understand that there is a meeting later on with the FIA to double-check the scenario for Sunday because apparently, it’s looking really bad. So, we’ll see if there are any changes on the schedule for the weekend,” added Cadillac’s Sergio Pérez.
The sport’s governing body, the FIA, issued a statement on Thursday.
“We are closely monitoring the weather forecast for this weekend,” an FIA spokesperson said. “Having faced a similar situation last year in Miami with threats of thunderstorms, we have a contingency plan in place and will activate it if needed to minimise disruption to the on-track [program].”
Last year, wet weather on Saturday forced the cancellation of the second F1 Academy race at the Miami Grand Prix, and the F1 Sprint race began in tricky conditions. Charles Leclerc crashed in those conditions ahead of the F1 Sprint race, and did not make the start.
As of Friday morning, forecasts are calling for showers in the morning with heavy thunderstorms on Sunday afternoon, with an 85% chance of rain and up to a half-inch of precipitation during the afternoon:
Complicating matters is the fact that few drivers have operated this year’s machinery in wet conditions, as noted by Piastri. Drivers are still coming to grips with the impact of the new regulations, which were tweaked during the extended break.
Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli, the current championship leader, is one of the few drivers who has experienced the new cars in wet conditions. He described that experience as “tricky” on Thursday.
“Yeah, I drove the car when we did the shakedown in Silverstone in the wet and definitely it was very tricky,” said Antonelli.
“Although now with the changes, they clipped the power to 250 kilowatts for the wet and no boost, so that’s already a step forward in that regard. And definitely I think it’s going to be tricky because there will be a lot of unknown, and obviously we’re also going to be racing if the wet weather presents. But I think also another big topic is that we will need to increase tire blanket [temperatures] for the wet because I think as they are now, probably they will be a bit too low for the conditions.
“So yeah, it’s going to be interesting to see, tricky, but let’s see. If it’s thunderstorms, like they say, we probably also won’t get under way for quite a bit of time. So, let’s see how that goes,” added Antonelli. “But definitely it’s going to be very interesting because there’s so much unknown in the wet at the moment, especially no one really used the inter tires, so we don’t know how it’s going to feel, how much grip there will be, especially with the new regulation. And I think also one thing with this year’s cars, it’s a bit harder to build temperature with the tyres, so in the wet they might be tricky and that’s why we probably would need to increase tire blanket [temps] in order to make it a bit better and a bit easier on that side. But yeah, let’s see what’s going to happen.”
As Antonelli pointed out, ahead of the Miami Grand Prix, the FIA announced that the new boost mode would not be accessible for drivers in wet conditions, like we may see on Sunday.
Regarding what F1 could do to the schedule, the 2024 São Paulo Grand Prix may be a guide. Ahead of that race, qualifying for the Grand Prix was moved from Saturday to Sunday morning due to severe weather, and the start time of the Grand Prix on Sunday was pushed up by 90 minutes as well.

Playing without Kevin Durant for the fourth time in the series, the Rockets relied on that verve in a 99-93 road win in Game 5 on Wednesday that sent the series back to Houston for Game 6 on Friday. Once down 3-0 in the series, the Rockets have fought their way back into contention.
“That was a mantra of ours coming into the series,” Rockets coach Ime Udoka said. “Let’s win the 50/50 battle, win the possession battle, offensive rebounds, turnovers and loose balls.
“It felt like they were the aggressor and outhustling us in the first few games. But you see more guys getting on the floor, more guys pressuring full court, and I think that’s starting to wear them down a little bit. And we saw the success that recipe had last game.”
Without Durant, the Rockets again used the same starting lineup, the second-youngest since postseason lineups were first tracked more than 50 years ago: Reed Sheppard, Jabari Smith Jr., Amen Thompson, Alperen Sengun and Tari Eason.
All five contributed to the win, with Sheppard, Smith and Thompson again distancing themselves from their roles in the ignominious end to Game 3.
“After what happened in Game 3, we could have very easily shut it down, pouted and quit,” Sheppard said. “That’s not what we did. We learned from it, we keep fighting and we keep giving ourselves a chance to play.”
Durant is listed as doubtful for Game 6 with the ankle injury he sustained in Game 2. Multiple reports Thursday indicated he will sit out again.
The Lakers again struggled with ball security, as they conceded 18 points off their 15 turnovers. The Lakers are committing 17.8 turnovers per 100 plays, nearly six more than the Rockets (12.2), and their ongoing inability to secure the ball has benefited a Houston offense struggling with efficiency.
“The turnovers come in all shapes and sizes, and it’s about limiting them,” Lakers coach JJ Redick said. “You certainly have to give your guys freedom to make basketball plays.”
Lakers guard Austin Reaves returned from a four-week injury absence (oblique) and posted 22 points and six assists in 34 minutes off the bench in Game 5. However, Reaves missed 12 of 16 field goals and posted a minus-5 plus/minus in his series debut.
Reaves’ presence didn’t have the expected impact on the Lakers’ offense, likely a product of the length of time he was sidelined and the lack of a proper ramp-up.
“I haven’t played in a month, unfortunately,” Reaves said. “… It’s hard to emulate real basketball reps, even if you’re doing it in practice. It’s really hard to get that same feel. So, yeah, I got a little tired in the second half, but it’s something I’ve got to push through. I don’t have the liberty to play a couple of warm-up games. I get tossed back into the fire on Friday, and hopefully we’ll have a better result.”
Integrating Reaves wasn’t a seamless transition. Though Luka Doncic (hamstring) remains sidelined, the Lakers’ failure to finish off the series with their shooting guard back in the rotation speaks to their difficulty in putting the Rockets to bed.
“We’ll take a look at the whole process and take a look at the substitution patterns and figure out where we can be better in Game 6,” Redick said.

Mavi, a right-arm medium pacer, has been ruled out of the ongoing season due to a groin injury.
All-rounder RS Ambrish was a part of the triumphant Indian squad of the ICC Under-19 World Cup 2026. He was also India U-19’s joint-highest wicket-taker at the tournament, with 11 against his name.
Ambrish, who is a right-arm medium pacer and a left-handed batter, will join Pat Cummins and Co. for Rs. 30 lakh.

“It’s going to be a very interesting weekend for us,” the 19-year-old Italian said. “Let’s see how we do. For sure, (our rivals are) going to get closer, and we might have to fight quite a bit more this weekend, but we’ll do our best and we’re going to keep our heads down.
“On my side, I’m going to try to maximize the performance in the car, I’m going to do my best and we’ll see what the result will be.”
Antonelli swept the F1’s two-race stay in Asia, winning the Chinese Grand Prix and Japanese Grand Prix after earning pole position both times.
That came after Mercedes teammate George Russell opened the season by capturing the Australian Grand Prix. Antonelli and Russell are 1-2 in the drivers’ standings, with Russell only nine points off the pace.
Antonelli said Mercedes has been clear with both drivers about how they’re expected to handle themselves as they jostle for a championship.
“They said we can race each other, but obviously with respect, not doing any stupid things between each other,” Antonelli said.
“At the end of the day… We race for each other, we want to win, we want to be the best, but at the same time we want the best for the team as well. Me and George are very well aware that we can race each other, but with respect, and without trying to do any stupid things.
“The team has given us the green light, because they want to give both of us the same opportunity. They said we can race each other, but just be clean.”
Ferrari is Mercedes’ closest rival so far. Mercedes leads Ferrari 135 points to 90 in the manufacturers’ standings, and Mercedes drivers Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton occupy the third and fourth spots in the drivers’ standings.
