A protest outside a federal immigration facility descended into chaos after a reporter was allegedly attacked while covering the demonstration, with shocking scenes unfolding in front of cameras.
Savannah Hernandez, a journalist affiliated with Turning Point USA, says she was assaulted while reporting outside the Whipple ICE facility in Minneapolis during a controversial nationwide day of anti-ICE protests.
The demonstrations, branded “National F*ck ICE Day,” drew crowds in multiple major cities including Chicago and Los Angeles, with protesters gathering at federal sites to voice opposition to immigration enforcement policies.
But in Minneapolis, tensions quickly escalated.
Crowds lined the fencing outside the facility, waving signs with explicit anti-ICE slogans as the atmosphere grew increasingly charged. Video from the scene shows demonstrators packed tightly along barriers, shouting and confronting those nearby.
According to Hernandez, the situation turned violent as she filmed from a public street.
She claims she was suddenly targeted, with one individual allegedly punching her and knocking her to the ground as others rushed in, forcing bystanders to intervene and break up the confrontation.
“All of this because I was standing outside on a public street filming a protest in the United States of America,” she said in a statement posted online.
Authorities later confirmed multiple arrests connected to the unrest. The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office said four people were taken into custody following the protest, with several arrests tied to alleged assaults involving both a journalist and a deputy, though it has not been officially confirmed whether those charges are directly linked to Hernandez’s case.
Hernandez also identified one individual she claims incited the crowd against her, alleging he had been involved in a previous high-profile incident earlier this year.
The protest itself comes amid ongoing tensions surrounding immigration enforcement operations in the area, with repeated demonstrations taking place outside the Whipple facility in recent months.
As video of the confrontation spreads online, the incident is fueling fresh debate over press freedom, protest conduct, and the increasingly volatile atmosphere surrounding political demonstrations in the United States.
