Mandatory Credit: Steven Bisig-Imagn Images For the second time this week, the Minnesota Lynx will face the Storm in Seattle on Wednesday in the final game for both teams before the WNBA’s All-Star break. The Lynx (21-6) defeated the Storm (6-22) on Monday night behind a herculean effort from rookie point guard Olivia Miles. The No. 2 overall draft pick tallied 32 points, eight rebounds and eight assists in the 105-102 victory. Miles became just the fifth player in WNBA history to record such a stat line in a game and joined Candace Parker as the only rookie to do it. On the season, Miles is averaging 19.6 points, 4.8 rebounds and 6.0 assists per game while shooting 50.1% from the floor. She ranks eighth in the league in scoring and seventh in assists. The Lynx also have enjoyed recent standout performances from veteran guard Kayla McBride, who was named WNBA Player of the Week after averaging 27 points per game over her last three outings, all wins for Minnesota. The Lynx have needed great scoring performances from Miles and McBride because, while they’ve won six straight games, they’ve allowed 90 points or more in three of their last four. “It’s special when you can walk away with a win and be like, ‘We have so many things to get better at,'” Miles said. Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve added: “Our three perimeter players have been special all season. Right now, we’re needing them to have these prolific efforts in order for us to win a game because our defense is nowhere to be found.” Help is on the way. Napheesa Collier, the two-time MVP runner-up and 2024 Defensive Player of the Year, will be on a minutes restriction when she makes her season debut on Wednesday, per Reeve. Collier had offseason surgery on both her ankles after tearing ligaments in her left ankle during a playoff game last September. “I’m going to be mindful of how many minutes she plays, but she hates the idea of a minutes restriction, so just don’t tell her,” Reeve told reporters. “… We still have a couple more steps to go before we see the Phee we know her to be.” The Storm are riding a five-game losing streak and have lost seven of their last eight games. Still, their young core of Dominique Malonga, Awa Fam and Flau’jae Johnson — all first-round picks over the last two drafts — have continued to shine. Johnson had 26 points against the Lynx on Monday, while Malonga is averaging 16.1 points, 8.5 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game. “Actually, our youth is our strength. We have a lot of energy, and we never stop,” Malonga recently told Slam Magazine. “I really can’t wait to keep developing this chemistry with the two of them because I think that’s a real big three right there.” –Field Level Media #Deadspin #Lynx #easing #Napheesa #Collier #season #debut #Storm

The basketball world was ablaze on Wednesday morning after the Miami Heat’s YouTube account mistakenly posted a video the night ‌before teasing the possible return of LeBron James, who has yet to announce where he will play his 24th NBA season.

A live stream titled “LeBron James Introductory Press Conference” scheduled for ‌July 27 was uploaded to the Heat’s channel on Tuesday night but was ‌later deleted, leaving fans wondering if ‌the 41-year-old is heading back to the team he won two championships with.

A team spokesperson told ESPN that the Heat’s social media department was preparing for the possibility of ‌James’ signing and mistakenly posted the link to the team’s YouTube page.

The Heat did not immediately respond to a request for comment ‌from Reuters.

James announced he was leaving the Los Angeles Lakers last month and where he plays next has become the most compelling off-season storyline, with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Philadelphia 76ers and Heat all reportedly ‌top candidates.

The anticipation has even seeped into the betting world as BetOnline Sports & Casino is taking wagers on when James will announce his decision, with July 24 leading the way and Miami coming as the favoured destination.

Rich ‌Paul, James’ long-time friend and agent, said on a podcast episode released earlier this week that his client will not be hurried into a decision.

“We’re not going to be rushed,” Paul said on an episode of “Game Over with Max Kellerman and Rich ‌Paul” released on Monday. “It’s his choice to make and when he makes the choice, he’ll make it.”

Deadspin | Seth Lugo’s durability on display as Royals aim to sweep Giants Jul 17, 2026; Kansas City, Missouri, USA; Kansas City Royals starting pitcher Seth Lugo (67) throws a pitch in the first inning against the San Diego Padres at Kauffman Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Peter Aiken-Imagn Images Amid all the health issues within Kansas City’s rotation, Seth Lugo continues to grind. Looking for another strong home start, the veteran right-hander also tries to continue his recent starting dominance over San Francisco as the Royals aim for a three-game sweep of the Giants on Wednesday. Lugo (3-6, 4.39 ERA) could be headed toward a first losing record in his five seasons serving primarily as a starter. However, the 36-year-old is scheduled to make his team-leading 21st start, and seven of his 11 quality starts have come through 11 home appearances. That makes him a potentially enticing trade option. However, the Royals’ front office noted it won’t actively shop Lugo or fellow veteran hurler Michael Wacha, but will listen to offers presented as Kansas City sits last in the American League Central. “I think the general thought is it’s going to have to be very enticing for us, because (Lugo and Wacha), we’re going to count on,” Royals general manager J.J. Picollo said. Five of Lugo’s quality starts have come while going 2-2 with a 2.94 ERA in his last six outings at home. The only non-quality start during that stretch came June 10, when he left in the fourth against Texas after taking a line drive to the forehead. On Friday, Lugo allowed two runs (one earned) over six innings of Kansas City’s 7-6, 10-inning home victory over San Diego. Since returning to a full-time starter role in 2023, Lugo is 2-1 with a 1.01 ERA in four starts against the Giants. The most recent outing came in 2024 at Kansas City, where he yielded two runs over seven innings. Following back-to-back one-run victories, with quality starts from Wacha and Luinder Avila, the Royals are 4-1 on a post-All-Star break six-game homestand. “We got an opportunity for a sweep,” Vinnie Pasquantino, who had two hits with an RBI during the 3-2 win Tuesday, told Royals.TV. “Gotta try to take it the best we can.” San Francisco, meanwhile, has totaled 11 runs, 23 hits and gone 4-of-25 with runners in scoring position while losing four straight on a six-game trip. “You got to control what you can control,” Giants manager Tony Vitello said. Among the major league leaders in batting average at .323, the Giants’ Luis Arraez is likely to rejoin the lineup after being rested Tuesday. He’s 1-for-5 all-time versus Lugo. Teammate Rafael Devers is 4-for-8 with two homers against Lugo. Scheduled San Francisco starter Landen Roupp (7-8, 3.98) has recorded four quality starts in his last five, and allowed one run and five hits over 15 innings while going 2-0 in July. On Friday, the right-hander gave up two of those hits through seven innings during the Giants’ 7-0 victory at Seattle. Roupp’s only previous start against the Royals came in 2024, when he allowed three hits and three walks over five innings of San Francisco’s 9-0 win at Kansas City. While Royals star Bobby Witt Jr. could miss a second straight game with back tightness, teammate Jac Caglianone might also sit after he exited Tuesday’s contest with a sore right shoulder. “Just landed hard,” Caglianone told reporters, “but I should be good.” Salvador Perez, 0-for-2 versus Roupp, remains one shy of tying George Brett’s franchise-record 317 homers.
