“When I came home, I felt like I had to give back to my neighborhood.” Criterion Channel has unveiled an official trailer for a doc series tilted Conbody vs Everbody, a documentary from filmmaker Debra Granik (of Winter’s Bone, Leave No Trace). This initially premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival with two episodes – with the full series finally ready to watch now. Throughout the course of eight years, Coss Marte constructs ConBody, a gym modeled after the exercises he learned while incarcerated. This five-part doc series follows former inmate Coss Marte and his attempt to help others fresh out of prison. As he wages an uphill battle against the stigma of incarceration and realities of a relentlessly gentrifying city where second chances are hard to come by, the result is both an inspiring portrait of a man on a mission and a powerful examination of a system that continues to punish people even after serving their time. Glad that Criterion is giving this a chance to be seen as it seems to be much more than just a series about a workout. Check it out.

Filmed over 8 years, this five-part doc series from director Debra Granik combines a remarkable, against-the-odds story of grit, survival, and redemption with an incisive look at the harms of America’s prison industrial complex. After years in and out of prison, former drug dealer turned entrepreneur Coss Marte is determined to take control of his future by building Conbody, a New York City gym with a unique social purpose: to employ formerly incarcerated people in an attempt to combat the high rate of recidivism. As Marte wages an uphill battle against the stigma of incarceration & realities of a relentlessly gentrifying city where second chances are hard to come by, what emerges is both an inspiring portrait of a man on a mission + an examination of a system that continues to punish people even after they’ve served their time.

Conbody vs Everbody is a documentary series directed by acclaimed American filmmaker Debra Granik, director of the films Down to the Bone Winter’s Bone, Stray Dog, and Leave No Trace previously, plus some other doc work. Produced by Anne Rosellini, Joslyn Barnes. Executive produced by Diane Weyermann, Jeff Skoll. With cinematography by Eric Phillips-Horst, Kefentse Johnson, Sean Hanley. This initially premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival with two episodes to start a few years back. Criterion will debut Granik’s ConBody vs Everbody doc series streaming on Criterion Channel starting May 1st, 2026 coming up soon.
