The U.K. and Ireland box office maintained a steady rhythm over the weekend as Disney’s “Toy Story 5” retained the number one spot for a third consecutive frame. The Pixar release collected £5.7 million ($7.6 million), pushing its three-week cumulative total to £37.9 million ($50.7 million).
Universal secured second place with the wide-circuit launch of “Minions & Monsters.” Rolling out with full saturation across more than 300 locations, the film generated a solid opening weekend of $5.8 million.
Black Bear’s ensemble comedy-drama “The Invite” opened in third place, rolling out across more than 300 sites to bank an opening frame of $1.06 million. The performance narrowly edged out Warner Bros.’ superhero holdover “Supergirl,” which moved to fourth place in its sophomore session, pocketing £$1.05 million for a 10-day running total of $6 million.
Universal also controlled the middle of the chart with its holdovers. The horror-romance “Obsession” took the fifth spot in its eighth week of release with $661,785, lifting its cumulative total to $23.4 million. Right behind at number six, Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi thriller “Disclosure Day” captured $653,153 in its fourth weekend, driving its total to $15.8 million.
Paramount’s “Jackass: Best and Last” moved to seventh place in its sophomore frame, drawing $561,975 for a running total of $2.3 million. A24’s psychological horror hit “Backrooms” followed at No. 8 in its sixth weekend of release, taking $268,570 over the frame to reach a haul of $16.9 million.
Yash Raj Films secured ninth place with its spy universe action entry “Alpha,” yielding an opening weekend of $214,729. Paramount’s franchise parody revival “Scary Movie” completed the top 10 in its fifth frame, adding $160,930 to its total, which now rests at $12.3 million.
Looking ahead, CinemaLive kicks off the mid-week footprint on Wednesday, July 8, with the opera presentation “Aida On Sydney Harbour – Opera Australia 2015.” On Friday, Disney leads the wide-circuit expansion with its live-action adaptation “Moana” launching into more than 300 locations, while Studiocanal rolls out its genre offering “Evil Dead Burn” into wide commercial footprints. Bakrania Media also captures targeted Bollywood screens on Friday with the comedy sequel “Dhamaal 4.”
Mubi debuts Karim Aïnouz’s ensemble drama “Rosebush Pruning,” while Dartmouth Films opens Daniele Rugo’s medical documentary “Life Support” in over 25 sites. Bulldog Film Distribution rolls out Francesco Sossai’s Italian comedy “The Last One For The Road,” alongside Watermelon Pictures’ launch of the documentary feature “Shoot The People” and Verve Pictures’ “Letters From Baghdad.”
Repertory and archival bookings are led by BFI Distribution’s 4K restoration rollout of Sumitra Peries’ classic Sri Lankan drama “The Girls” (Gehenu Lamai), alongside Park Circus reissuing the classic Aardman animations “A Grand Day Out” and “The Wrong Trousers” across select screens.
