In a quiet street in northern Singapore, a car plies the road like any other – except it is a left-hand drive from China and the person in the driver’s seat has been trained to keep his hands off the wheel and his foot off the pedals unless an emergency arises.
Eventually, there will be no need for a safety officer or any human behind the wheel at all – mirroring the autonomous vehicles (AVs) already operating in cities such as Beijing, Shenzhen, San Francisco and Los Angeles.
For now, Singapore is in the early stages of rolling out AVs, specifically robotaxis, to the public.
Jeffrey Siow, the acting transport minister, said last September that the country aimed to have around 100 to 150 of these vehicles on the road by the end of this year.
Major ride-hailing companies Grab and ComfortDelGro were given the green light to collaborate with leading Chinese AV manufacturers WeRide and Pony.ai, respectively, to test and deploy shuttle taxi services on public roads in Punggol.

Chinese AV companies are industry leaders, experts say, and are keen to show that their vehicles can operate in international markets – despite profitability concerns, as most are still in the start-up phase and rely heavily on investments.

The picturesque town of Gabala in northwest Azerbaijan hosted the fourth round of civil societies talks between Armenia and Azerbaijan representatives as the two countries continue to build on their process of peaceful future together after decades of tragic conflicts.

Amernia and Azerbaijan established together the so-called Peace Initiative Bridge format shortly after the two former foes signed their historic peace agreement in Washington DC. The Peace Initiative Bridge includes multiple participants from the two countries’ civil society who visit each other to conduct the ongoing peace dialogue by addressing all common issues openly and in an atmosphere of trust.
In an answer to Euronews, Armenia’s Areg Kochinyan, president of the Armenian Council and the Armenian coordinator of the Peace Initiative Bridge, said the two countries have to deal with a “gigantic amount of trauma,” as both nations are making significant efforts to move on as part of their historic peace agreement.
However, he added that “the normalistion and the peace in South Caucuses is well-needed in the West, in Europe, in the United States and that’s partially the reason why we have seen this level of interest of the United States in the region.”
On Azerbaijan’s side, Farhad Mammadov, director of the Center for Studies of the South Caucasus and Azerbaijan’s coordinator of the Peace Initiative Bridge, said that “the conflicts in the region did not have a negative effect on the peace-building process.”
“This is a two-way peace-building process and it is autonomous,” he added.
The focus of Saturday’s meeting in Gabala was on building momentum for the ongoing peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Armenia’s Lusine Kharatyan, writer and cultural anthropologist as well as member of the Peace Bridge Initiative, told Euronews that “it is extremely important to continue these talks in this world where violence and conflict grows around us, so it’s very important to keep the track of peace.”
“I think the talks went very well because we were able to discuss very important and sensitive issues for both societies and do it very deeply and very sensitively towards each other,” she added.
Eleonora Sargsyan from Armenia, a youth worker and member of the Peace Bridge Initiative said that “for 30 years, we’ve lived with closed borders and we haven’t had the chance of structured dialogue, which created a framework of mutual dehumanisation.”
“I believe that one of the primary objectives of peacebuilding initiatives and any civil society initiatives that untites Armenian and Azerbaijani experts is to start the process of rehumanisation.”
In its turn, Azerbaijan’s representatives underlined the importance to both countries to deepen the dialogue at civil society level.
Orkhan Amashov, Azerbaijan’s participant of the Peace Bridge Participant, described the discussions as being “incredibly comprehensive and wide-ranging.”
“The participants here are to prepare their respective societies for that ultimate eventuality – a peace agreement – and its consequences.” , he added.
Ramil Iskandarli, chairman of the Board of Azerbaijan’s National NGO Forum, and member of the Peace Bridge Initiative, described the symbolism of both sides crossing each other’s borders for peace talks.
“Both I and (the) other group members crossed the border between Azerbaijan and Armenia twice and our Armenian colleagues did the same to come to Gabala,” he said.
He added that “this particular meeting is important because it represents the fourth step actually. I am participating from the very first day of this process,” underlining that “there is also a certain symbolism in this process.”
Energy disruption has become a dominant challenge due to the global climate of instability also due to Iran’s Strait of Hormuz blockade crisis, which has shifted attention to the South Caucasus as a critical alternative route that Azerbaijan and Armenia are now working together to develop as a joint opportunity.
Hikmet Hajiyev, foreign policy advisor to the president of Azerbaijan, led Saturday’s peace talks and greeted each participant.
In a post on X after the talks, he announced that Azerbaijan is “fully committed to the Washington agenda” of the peace process and that “this commitment is not merely declarative or confined to paper; rather, concrete and pragmatic steps are being taken to strengthen the peace agenda,” in the context of both countries continuing the development of the major regional project of the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity, also known as the TRIPP corridor, which is a US-backed, 42-kilometre transit corridor through Armenia’s Syunik region which connects Azerbaijan to its Nakhchivan exclave.
Hajiyev underlined the fast developing economic cooperation between Azerbaijan and Armenia stating that “these include bilateral trade, transit shipments to Armenia via Azerbaijan, and people-to-people contacts, all of which reflect the concept of the economic dividends of peace.”
The participants concluded the Gabala talks agreeing that continued dialogue is an important step in maintaining communication between the two sides.

Kenji Mboma Dem scored the equalizing goal off an assist from Ayoub Jabbari in second-half stoppage time as visiting FC Cincinnati earned a 1-1 tie against Toronto FC on Saturday afternoon.
While FC Cincinnati (2-4-1, 7 points) played the final 19-plus minutes at a man disadvantage, they also overcame an own goal in the 83rd minute to earn a point.
Toronto FC took a 1-0 lead on an own goal when a crossing pass grazed the back of Josh Sargent’s head and was redirected off the right foot of Gilberto Flores.
Frustrated that he didn’t draw a foul call, Kevin Denkey was issued a yellow in the 70th minute after he slammed his cleat to the ground in protest. In the 71st minute, his elbow caught Benjamin Kuscevic in the jaw, the infraction occurred away from the play and Denkey was issued a second yellow and sent off.
Cincinnati had four shots on goal and Toronto (3-2-2, 11 points) – which is unbeaten (3-0-2) in its last five matches – also had four.
FC Cincinnati made its first solid run of the match in the sixth minute when Evander broke out of the midfield with possession and slid a pass beyond the Toronto backline to Tom Barlow. But, Barlow’s shot was smothered by Toronto FC goalkeeper Luka Gavran for the save.
It was a quiet first half until Evander drew a yellow card on Jonathan Osorio in first-half stoppage time which resulted in a restart just outside the box and even with the end line. He skipped a pass Matt Miazga headed towards the far post that forced a punch save from Gavran. The match was tied 0-0 at halftime.
At the start of the second half, Denkey was buried deep in the corner of FC Cincinnati’s attacking third. He slung a pass to Evander who couldn’t connect on a one-timer from six yards out. Moments later Nick Hagglund launched himself into an Evander corner kick Gavran turned away with his knees in the 54th minute.
In the 59th minute Sargent gathered a stretch pass from Daniel Salloi but Samuel Gidi’s left footed challenge from behind deflected the ball wide of the goal at the last second.

After clinching the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference, the New York Knicks are expected to sit a number of key players in their regular-season finale against the visiting Charlotte Hornets on Sunday.
New York (53-28) has won five straight games and 12 of its past 15, including a 112-95 victory over the Toronto Raptors on Friday.
Before opening their first-round series either next Saturday or Sunday, the Knicks will face a Charlotte team headed to the East’s play-in tournament.
The Hornets (43-38) saw their chances at a guaranteed playoff bid evaporate with a 118-100 home loss to the top-seeded Detroit Pistons on Friday. Charlotte has lost two straight following a four-game winning streak.
As a result, the Hornets will be locked outside of the top eight. With a win on Sunday, they will earn the ninth seed. If they lose and the Miami Heat win, the Hornets would slide down to 10th.
LaMelo Ball had 27 points and eight assists, and Brandon Miller added 22 points and four steals in Friday’s loss for the Hornets.
Charlotte allowed 62 points in the paint and was outscored 25-10 in the fourth quarter.
“(The Pistons) are good at being physical and getting to the paint,” Hornets coach Charles Lee said. “Offensively, we let some of their physicality bother us. Our screening was not physical enough, way too many guys going under. Not the group that I think we’ve been the last couple of weeks, and what we’ve built throughout the season.”
Rookie of the Year candidate Kon Knueppel scored 10 points on 4-of-12 shooting in the loss for the Hornets, who were outscored 27-12 on second-chance points.
“A night like this can really put things in perspective,” Charlotte forward Grant Williams said. “I thought that we could have upped our physicality. Rather than us rallying together and understanding that 10 points is nothing in the NBA, I think we went the opposite way. I think the group just didn’t necessarily commit to understanding that.”
Knueppel made two 3-pointers in the loss and became the 13th NBA player with at least 270 3-pointers in a season.
The Hornets defeated New York 114-103 in their last meeting in Charlotte on March 26.
New York won its seventh straight home game on Friday and impressed Toronto coach Darko Rajakovic in the process.
“(The Knicks) have a lot of depth. They’re an elite offensive rebounding team. They have an amazing closer in (Jalen) Brunson. They have an amazing shooter and rebounder and playmaker in Karl-Anthony Towns,” Rajakovic said. “I can talk about their roster and how well they’ve played for a long time. They’re an elite, elite team.”
Brunson scored 29 points, and Towns added 22 points and 10 rebounds to help the Knicks complete a season sweep (5-0) against the Raptors and improve to 30-9 at home this season.
New York shot 54.7 percent from the field and outscored Toronto 58-40 in the paint.
“Tonight was a good night to show our improvement as a team,” Towns said. “Things we can be better at, but I think that right now confidence is high, morale is great in the locker room. It feels good to step into Sunday with that kind of momentum.”
One area of concern is the status of forward OG Anunoby, who exited the game midway through the second quarter with an injured left ankle and did not return.
Anunoby will rest on Sunday as the Knicks focus on their first-round matchup. The Knicks have about a week for Anunoby to recover before facing the East’s No. 6 seed.
